Question:

More evidence that AGW is a threat. Are the oceanograpers in on the "great conspiracy" too?

The oceans are warming from climate change, becoming more acidic from the increase in CO2 in the atmosphere caused by human activity, and pollution from human activities is causing massive changes as is over fishing. Three-quarters of the Earth is covered with water and we can now quantify numerous problems caused by AGW, CO2 and other pollutants. Isn't it reasonable to take actions to reduce global warming given the huge impact that oceans have on human species?

  1. what is your question or do you just rant on and on and on and on and on and on and on, without ever saying anything worth hearing.

  2. Your source doesn't do a very good job of blaming reef condition on global warming...... did you post the wrong link??

  3. Everyone is in on the big conspiracy except those few "learned deniers" who know the real truth.

    That being:

    326,000,000 cubic miles of water

    To convert cubic miles to cc X by (5260 X 12 X 2.54)*3

1 calorie to raise 1 cc of water 1 deg C

10*15 calories per megaTon of TNT

1 MT of TNT the average yield of an atomic  bomb

    (326000000 X (5260 X 12 X 2.54)*3 X1)/ 10*15 =

A one degree rise in the temperature of the world's oceans is the equivalent to the energy of 1.358 BILLION atom bombs.

Thats a nice round number, too; lots of zeros in that number.

Worse, projections are for a 5 deg C rise in ocean temperature in my lifetime.  That is the equivalent of one atom bomb for every man woman and child alive on the planet today.

And energy doesn't sit dormantly, it makes things change.

  4. The main threat to coral reefs is the acidification of oceans, which is due to increased atmospheric CO2.  Coral reefs provide habitat for millions of aquatic species.

This is one of many reasons that even if you're not sold on man-made global warming, you should support strong carbon emissions reductions.  Our consumption of fossil fuels has a lot more negative consequences than just causing global warming.  We need to get off our addiction to oil ASAP.

  5. Well the first problem is that there are still people that use misinformation to fuel the imaginary debate of global warming.  Currently most developed nations are trying to agree on how to lower CO2 emissions while making it fair for all countries.

"Even the most remote reefs are subject to threats such as marine debris, illegal fishing and climate-related effects of coral bleaching, disease and ocean acidification."

This is the excerpt from the article that explains that global warming and over fishing are causing bleaching, acidification, etc to coral reefs.

  6. Actually the oceans have cooled measurably since 2003.........   Not yet undoing the earlier warming but it does take time for the ocean temperature to change.

Please note, this would appear to be consistent with "global warming has stalled."

  7. Very little CO2 is dissolved in our oceans. Prove it to your self. Take a carbonated beverage and put some salt in it. What happened. It almost explodes in the rush of the CO2 to get out.

  8. It is true what some members answered: corals are sensitive to ocean acidification, but it was also proved that corals are able to adapt to the sea-water's new chemical composition by changing their internal structure (skeleton).

So we cannot make any decision based on just observing coral sensitivity to environmental changes.

Also, it is said that some people came to realize that the accuracy of  past ocean temperatures recorded (which can be found on line), is SOMETIMES QUESTIONABLE. That doesn't mean the oceans are or aren't  getting warmer, all I'm saying is that humans make mistakes every now and then (intentionally or not)...and I won't go deeper into this.

Furthermore, the oldest info we have about ocean temperatures is from 1880, which is also subject to measurement errors due to the lack of technology.

I didn't hear of any conspiracy around, but I do know of oceanographers who wouldn't talk out loud about their research, fearing they might loose their jobs...
