Golfweek editor speaks out after firing

In the wake of inflammatory comments made by Golf Channel analyst Kelly Tilghman about Tiger Woods, Golfweek's Jan. 19 issue featured a controversial cover of a noose, which led to the firing Thursday of the magazine's editor Dave Dave Seanor. Seanor spoke on Friday to Yahoo! Sports golf editor Michael Arkush:

Yahoo! Sports: How was the cover decided upon?

Seanor: There wasn't that much else, really. We put together two or three different images of either Kelly or a noose. We did rough mock-ups that sat taped to the outside of a cubicle for a couple of days. They had either different photos of nooses or Kelly's picture...

Finally a white person saying the right thing:    -You're white and you just wish this race thing would STOP. NOW !!!?  

I'm black and I wish this racism and bigotry would stop now too. However, I think you are probably not meaning it the way I wish you did.  

- Do you mean you wish that there was NO racism?   OR

- Do you mean that you wish that people would stop POINTING OUT racsim?

The cover shouldn't bother me because it's just a picture depicting a word and he shouldn't have been fired <like they didn't see it when it went to print - he was a scape goat>.

However, being black it gives me chills <but you can't understand that being white>.  The word LYNCH doesn't immediately conjure images for you. No one in your direct family lineage was lynched that you know of - right?

I think with so much violence everywhere, music, video games etc. and the over usage of racial slurs as acceptable in much of the music we have become desensitized to how inflammatory certain things are. Any one who has seen images from the days before civil rights would be horrified by the use of a noose and rightly so.

Golf and Polo are the two last sports that minorities do not own. Junior Golfers are coming, and Jaysee son will play Polo just you watch and see.

Non-issue. There was nothing wrong with the cover, it was just an illustration of the term used, a term that (for no reason at all) was made into a big issue.

Dave Seanor could have and should done nothing about the issue. It had already been beat to death. He got some bad advice and that person may very well have Dave's job now. It's lonely at the top.
