1. there is the mineral stone that was designed for hamsters & rats to gnaw on. i got a mineral sal and something else, and my rats never bothered touching it. so i just gave them carrots (: lol, go to your vet for advice.

  2. They adore cardboard rolls, like from toilet paper, hamster adore cardboard. Also try feeding him hard foods like maybe some carrot, as he'll like the taste of that. You can also try getting him flavoured chews, they sell them at a lot of pet shops and sometimes they are a hit with hammies. Also hamsters don't really need vitamine wheels or stones, they get all their vitamins from their hamster mix, hamsters rarely l**k their vitamin wheels, and the manufacturers often say they are suitable for hamster just to sell them, when they are not actually needed, so don;t worry about him not l*****g it.

What type of wood has he got? Sometimes animals have preferences to what type of wood they chew, apple branches are usually whats recommended for hamster and other rodents, I find my guinea pigs enjoy gnawing at willow sticks and branches. Now I haven;t tried this with hamsters and they are completely different species, but perhhaps yoru hamster would enjoy gnawing on willow. I always found that my hamster loved chewing plastic rather than wood. My hamster used to chew his plastic toys until there was nothing left of them so you might want to buy him some sort of plastic toy to chew.

If you still worried about his teeth maybe take him to the vet to get them filed down, If his teeth meet evenly then I doubt their too long, if they overlap quite a lot or curl, thats when you need to worry.

Good luck with his teeth :)

  3. my hamster didn't chew the wood either but you can take your hamster to the vet and get it done it's not too costly

  4. Try giving them puppy biscuits. Or soaking the wood chews in apple juice and letting them dry before you put them back in the cage.

  5. try puppy biscuits

  6. You can try toilet paper rolls, paper towel rolls, dog biscuits, small pieces of pvc pipe. If he wont chew you will have to take him to the vet to get his teeth cut down. Reason being:

    Teeth Problems

The incisor (front, gnawing) teeth grow continuously for the life of the hamster (this is true for all rodents). They receive continuous wear as the uppers and lowers contact each other, preventing overgrowth. Misalignment of either the upper or lower incisors because of previous injury, abscess formation of malnutrition may result in overgrowth of one or more of the teeth. Overgrown incisor teeth usually cause serious injury to the roof of the mouth. Sometimes the lower incisors actually grow through the roof of the mouth and into the nasal cavity!

Initial signs of this problem are inappetence and drooling. Total lack of eating, weight loss, and a foul odor from the mouth may be noted later. These signs often are completely overlooked.

A veterinarian must carefully trim the overgrown incisors and extract them from the roof of the mouth. Antibiotics are prescribed because of the high probability of infection following this type of injury. Periodic trimming of the incisors is usually necessary for the remainder of the hamster's life.

Some popular hamster houses made of plastic had holes in the horizontal and vertical tubes originating from the main rectangular enclosure. Hamsters frequently caught and broke their incisors in these holes in the plastic. The holes have since been made smaller by the manufacturer, and this injury is seen less frequently now
