  1. Duke of Devonshire (like most peerage titles) is a heriditary title (passed down from generation to generation) and there have been 12 to date.

    The current holder is: Peregrine Andrew Mornington Cavendish, 12th Duke of Devonshire, CBE

    Unless you know the full quote or the year it will be very difficult to find out which of the Dukes of Devonshire it is attributed to.


  2. I don't know anything about the Duke, but Benjamin Franklin was an eminent scientist–still cited in Physics books for discovering electrical charges–and was the senior statesman in the creation of United States as well as its representative abroad.

    Linus Pauling is a modern example, if winning a Nobel Peace prize qualifies one as a statesman.  Of course, Pauling wasn't born until 1901, so the Duke can be forgiven for not knowing who he was.
