Is it true that one hummingbird feeder will attract only one hummingbird at a time, and two feeders will do the same thing, but three or more feeders will attract lots of hummingbirds at a time?

  1. I have three feeders.  Hummers are VERY territorial and will fight with each other over their food source.  That's why it's always best to have more than one feeder.

  2. Nah.  We have two hanging up and get a few different types.  Some are grey, some a brown, one type is red...

Anyway I'm sure they work like regular bird feeders.  Our hummingbirds dont like going to the feeders when another hummingbird is there already, but as soon as one leaves comes the next in line.

  3. i have 2 ,1in the front the other in the back ,i have seen these birds wait on a tree branch and when another showed up would run him off, they are very territorial, but i have seen as many as 3 at a time at 1 feeder............tom

  4. No.  One feeder will attract many hummingbirds.  It's good to have two up when they drink it really fast.  They love to fight over the feeder too so it helps them all get a turn you have more feeders.

  5. not true. i have one feeder and have had up to 3 at a time on it and many different ones that keep comming back.

always use bottled or filtered water. watch for mold in your feeder .its unhealthy for them . and never clean your feeder with bleach.

  6. I have two feeders up and get about 5 hummingbirds, but only one at a time is at the feeder.  Mine are ruby throated hummingbirds, which are little haters and fight endlessly, defending the feeders from each other.  I think I could have a dozen feeders up and they would still fight.

Now I have the feeders set up where the hummingbirds can't easily see if anyone is at the other feeder, to cut down on the fighting.  The dominate male has figured out to sit on the telephone wires and watch both feeders, so I still ususally only have one bird at a feeder at once.

If you live where there are a couple species or more you should be able to have several at a feeder at once.
