Morehead State beat Eastern Kentucky Colonels in three sets – Volleyball news
Continuing with more success early in the season, the Morehead State volleyball team recorded another spectacular win over Eastern Kentucky on Wednesday, September 21. MSU had the competitive edge of playing at home as the Colonels failed to deal with the
powerful strike of their rivals. The Eagles posted 25-18, 25-21, 25-14 in straight sets and clinched success. Victory enhanced the overall record of Morehead Eagles to 8-5. On the other hand, Eastern Kentucky fell to 6-8 in the season. It was the 20th
win for the Eagles in their previous 21 conference matches. The crowd at Wetherby Gymnasium added a new dimension to the game and made its presence felt by supporting their team.
Ellie Roberson and Aryn Bohannon performed amazingly well and chipped in 15 points apiece. Aryn scored all her points on kills, while Ellie was credited with 14 successful attack-attempts and one service ace. On the other hand, Eastern Kentucky players failed
to match the performance of their opponents as none of the Colonels could go into double digits. Freshman Alexis Plagens was the top-scorer on EKU side with six points, while Hannah Burkle and Ashley Edmond each scored five points.
MSU recorded a total of 45 kills in response to Colonels’ 24 kills. However, EKU had comparatively better record in blocks completed. They finished the match with 8 blocks, while Eagles notched five blocks.
Eastern Kentucky scored the first point of the match as a result of an attack error by Emma Keough of MSU. The Eagles became promptly cautious and improved in the game with the next four points. Colonels struggled to catch up with their opponent but failed
to do so. MSU led the scores for the remainder of the set and heavily influenced the Colonels. Junior outside hitter Ellie Roberson produced powerful shots and helped her side stay ahead of EKU. The first set closed off at 25-18 with the Colonels on the losing
end.
In the second set the Colonels hit the floor with the first point. However, the Eagles replied and fired back with several points. Despite a great amount of resistance, Eastern Kentucky continued with their effort to down the rival side. They used different
tactics but could not achieve the desired results. The second set saw 7 ties of the scores but eventually success graced the Eagles. They claimed a second set at 25-21 and extended their lead to 2-0.
The loss of two straight sets was enough to drag the Eastern Kentucky Colonels under pressure, where as the Eagles enjoyed top form and opened the third set with four consecutive points. They led the scores for an entire set and bagged the victory by winning
the third set (25-14).
Eastern Kentucky will host the Tennessee-Martin squad on Friday, whereas the Eagles will finish the week with another home-stand fixture against UT Martin on Saturday.
