Moreno Moser all set for the UCI Road World Championships
After his numerous stunning performances throughout the season, Moreno Moser of Team Liquigas-Cannondale now aims towards the UCI Road World Championships in Valkenburg.
The 21-year-old surprised everyone with his astonishing victories in some of the most challenging events this year.
He managed to secure the top overall position at the Tour de Pologne along with two stage victories at the race.
He finished first at the Trofeo Laigueglia and the Eschborn-Frankfurt City Loop, second at the Trofeo Melinda and occupied the third spot at the Italian National Road Race Championships 2012.
The Italian proved his worth after winning the Polish race and was expected to represent his nation at the 2012 Olympic Games.
However, his performance was a little too late as the Team Coach Paolo Bettini had already selected the Italian squad for the London Olympics.
“Simply put, the coach had to pick his men for London before my exploit in Poland, so I wasn’t under any illusions,” Moser told Tuttobici.
“Even though I had done the pre-Olympic testing, I wasn’t hopeful from the start”.
“When I got back from Poland, I spoke on the phone with Bettini who confirmed that he would really have liked to have had me in London, but the rules meant that the selections had to be entered early, so there wasn’t much to be done”.
The cyclist had the World Championships in his mind and is saving up his strengths for the event which was the main reason why he skipped the Eneco Tour and rode the USA Pro Cycling Challenge instead.
Moreno fell sick during the Tour of the Basque Country which will prevent him from riding the Amstel Gold Race.
“I got sick at the Tour of Basque Country so I couldn’t ride Amstel and test it,” Moser said.
The Italian has also shown interest towards marking his Grand Tour appearance next year with the Giro d’Italia as his major objective.
The 2012 UCI Road World Championships are scheduled from September 15 to 23 in Valkenburg, Netherlands.
Last time Netherlands hosted the World Championships was back in 1998 and the 2012 version will be the sixth time for the country to host the event.
