The Nazionale international goalkeeper reflected on the national team’s visit to Auschwitz to pay a tribute to those who passed away during the horrifying Holocaust.
It was an emotional visit for all the Italian players as they were given a tour of the memorial of those who died during the tragic World War II incident. The players had an opportunity to talk to the survivors of the catastrophe.
The players paid their respects by lighting a candle and the Nazionale captain left a floral tribute. Many players were questioned and the elements of racism and anti-Semitism in football were brought up. De Sanctis reiterated
that lessons need to be learned from this and should not be repeated ever again. He further went on to state that there is a need to learn from such incidents and make sure that there should be any form of bigotry in society. He further went on to state:
“We can only hope something like that never happens again. After this visit we pledge to conserve the memory of these atrocities and hand it down to future generations so they can fight discrimination of any kind. The most moving
moment was listening to those who survived in the camp.”
There are fears that racist elements might be found during the Euro 2012 matches and the http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Napoli-c40003 shot stopper gave his thoughts on the subject and hoped that this would not be repeated again. He pointed towards Manchester City star,
http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Mario-Balotelli-c23937, in particular and remarked that nothing happened during their matches. He also went on to explain that he felt that players were taunted just because the supporters want to make the opposition players upset.
“I hope nobody is forced to leave the field in protest. There are chants against Mario Balotelli, but sometimes players are not jeered just because of the colour of their skin, but rather as they are disliked by certain supporters.
It happens to me and my other teammates too.”
Balotelli has been at the helm of a few racist incidents, where he has been provoked, even during his days in the Serie A.
