Morgan Hoffmann takes the halfway lead at the WNB Golf Classic
Morgan Hoffmann fired an eight-under par 64 and cruised into the halfway lead, in the Web.com Tour’s WNB Golf Classic, on Friday, September 21, 2012.
The $550,000 event is being played at the Midland Country Club in Midland, featuring some of the prominent names from the Web.com Tour.
Hoffmann made it to the 156-man field by recording an impressive nine-under par score in the Monday qualifier. On Tuesday, he played a practice round with Jamie Lovemark and Derek Fathauer and carded a 64.
He then managed to keep the momentum going into the official event by carding a four-under par 68 in the opening round on Thursday.
The American started off his second round campaign with a tied sixth position. A birdie on the second hole, followed by a sparkling eagle on the fourth gave him a strong boost on the leaderboard.
The eighth hole witnessed him lose the only shot of the day. However, he managed to offset that with a birdie on the very next hole.
He played even better on the back nine of the course, as he added the second eagle of his round on the 12th hole, and surged to the top of the leaderboard.
Another three birdies over the last five holes allowed him to extend the lead to three strokes.
"I'm playing the best golf of my life," said Hoffmann, who is No. 103 on the money list. "I'm just trying to go out there and try to have fun and not think about anything”.
"I felt a lot more pressure and felt like I had to live up to expectations,” he continued. “I was just trying to hit it too close and put too much pressure on certain shots. I felt like I needed to make putts. It's a huge learning experience for me and so
I'm trying to be relaxed over every shot”.
The defending champion Danny Lee and the overnight leader, Lovemark, were tied for the second position at a nine-under par overall score.
