Howdy ya'll, can anybody please tell me where I can find good boat dealers in Florida? My fiancee and I are working to buy a Morgan Out Island 41 Sail Boat and move to the Keys in 12 months time. Any info on the sail boat would be awesome too.

Thanks!!!

  1. i would suggest you find a good reputable yacht broker to find the boat you are looking for.  a good yacht broker will know boats that may be for sale, that may not be listed in soundings or other publications.  i have said it before, but these guys earn their money (which is a commission paid by the seller).  they can also line up a good surveyor for inspections and sea trials.   woud you buy/sell your house with out a r/e agent?  maybe, but is it always wise?  good luck!

  2. I don't know about dealers in Florida....try Soundings Magazine classifieds.but BOY do I know The Outhouse 41!

They were the first mass produced mass sold boats for the charter industry here in the Caribbean and I've sailed or delivered a bunch of them. So here's some things to look for:

There were two models of the sloops and ketch rigged boats......the later had a double spreader rig and about 8 feet added to the main and five to the mizzen because they were, to put it politely pigs to sail and WAY under rigged.  So please get the "extended" rigged version

Almost every OI was in charter service at one point in it's life. Now, OI have the reputation of being the Checker Cabs of the world...not too pretty but d**n near indestructible.....which is, by and large true. They are fairly heavily built and need to be...because a charter boat may well sail 20-35 weeks a year, 7 days a week; if they were in service in the Caribbean that's a lot of windward work and a lot of strain on a boat. So your Morgan has a lot of hours on the clock and needs to be looked at carefully.

Because of indifferent sailing the engine has been run a lot, especially motor sailing to windward so there's a thing to look at....the original models had the 40 something HP 4-107s in them which was totally inadequate..... 50-90 HP is what you need to drive that hull.

The decks in some boats were getting spongy so look for soft spots.

The chain plates were known to develop crevice corrosion and cracks and fail, so if the boat has its original plates in it, you must pull at least two and have the looked at closely.

Look for signs of the bulkheads de-laminating form the hull once again from being ridden hard and put away wet.

Now on the positive side they have an ocean of room below and are great live aboard..and with a good awning system the cockpit can be used 24/7  as a lanai  room .

They have the space to carry lots of water toys and stuff on deck and that big wide transom is a great place for davits and the dinghy.

Make sure there's some sort of heating system..it gets into the 40s in the Keys in the winter

  3. Repaired may in St Thomas Virgin Island They were in charter >There were called >out house 41>Wet snail> As they don't sail very well>And are slow>And wet> Leak like a sieve> Best check it out real good>Mast base>as they had some real issues<Have sail all the Keys & Bahamas & Down Island< I had a 40 endeavor>Depends what your wanting to  spend> There are some real steals out there> I know have a 48 sportfish> <Keys>Couldn't give you much good new on these boats knew them well>
