“I am fine with it. The ball is still pretty new and I come to bowl in the third or fourth over. It doesn't matter whether I am opening the bowling or coming as one-change,” the 27-year-old South African pacer said, adding that he was happy to be performing
any role the captain required of him.
Morkel has been having a successful IPL season so far, having bagged 3 for 18 in the team’s season opener against the Kolkata Knight Riders, before going on to claim 2 for 30 against the Royal Challengers Bangalore, and most recently 2 for 19 against the
Chennai Super Kings – a performance which won him the Player of the Match award.
During their previous match, the Daredevils’ tight fielding resulted in 4 run-outs during the Super Kings’ innings, and none of the batsmen managed to score more than 22 (http://www.senore.com/Cricket/DJ-Bravo-c1379).
Commenting on the need to maintain a winning strategy, rather than take the personal preferences of players into account, Morkel claimed that he saw no reason why the current order should be tinkered with when it was clearly working for the team.
“I believe there is no need to change the winning recipe. The current strategy is working for us. I am fine if I am given the new ball but there are two ways of attack. One should have a different gameplan for different conditions,” said the pacer, whose
team is currently at number 3 on the points table, having won 2 of the 3 matches they have played so far.
Morkel also stressed the importance of effective fielding, saying it was essential, in order to provide necessary support to the bowlers.
“It's an important thing for us to be strong on the field and back the bowlers up,” he said, adding that this would automatically put pressure on the team at bat, making it difficult for them to score.
