Mormons, LDS, Can aronic priesthood holder baptise?

I was told different. I was told the man would have to be a Melchizadek Priesthood holder?? IS that just to confirm a member?? My ex husband had the aronic priesthood and "could" stand in at baby blessings but not do our first born. My ex FIL had to baptise me. not my ex husband.

So what the deal?? Was I told wrong or did my ex's parents want a more worthy male.... (attending and more faithful?)

See mine and raisings three's answer...

  1. If the aaronic priesthood holder is ordained a priest they can baptize.  However, they cannot confirm.

  2. A priest can do baptisms however i believe that he has to get permission from the bishop.

  3. John the baptist held the Aaronic/Levitical priesthood and he baptized.

Within the LDS Church, the office of priest has the authority to baptize.  They don't have the authority to confirm the Holy Ghost upon the individual after baptism.  That authority is held by the Melchizedek Priesthood.  By this we see that John taught the baptism by fire is to be administered by one who posess the higher authority.

In case with your ex husband....he might have only been ordained to the office of either a deacon or a teacher........or he wasn't considered worthy to administer the ordinance.

When I was a priest I was able to baptize my cousin when we were teenagers.  My father confirmed him a member and administered unto him the gift of the Holy Ghost.

  4. Aaronic priesthood members can baptize. They don't have the authority to give the Gift of the Holy Ghost or to give baby blessings.

  5. I don't presume to know your in-laws or their reasons behind what they did/say.  But I do know I'm right on this topic.  I had a dear friend in high school that baptized his little sister when she turned 8 and he was 16 (being a Priest w/ the Aaronic Priesthood) because his father was not a member.  The branch president confirmed her, because Jeremy did not hold the Melchizedek priesthood.

    Doctrine & Covenants 13:1

Upon you my fellow servants, in the name of Messiah I confer the Priesthood of Aaron, which holds the keys of the ministering of angels, and of the gospel of repentance, and of baptism by immersion for the remission of sins; and this shall never be taken again from the earth, until the sons of Levi do offer again an offering unto the Lord in righteousness.

    Doctrine & Covenants 20:46-52

The priest’s duty is to preach, teach, expound, exhort, and baptize, and administer the sacrament,  And visit the house of each member, and exhort them to pray vocally and in secret and attend to all family duties.  And he may also ordain other priests, teachers, and deacons.  And he is to take the lead of meetings when there is no elder present; But when there is an elder present, he is only to preach, teach, expound, exhort, and baptize, And visit the house of each member, exhorting them to pray vocally and in secret and attend to all family duties. In all these duties the priest is to assist the elder if occasion requires.

    Doctrine & Covenants 107:20

The power and authority of the lesser, or Aaronic Priesthood, is to hold the keys of the ministering of angels, and to administer in outward ordinances, the letter of the gospel, the baptism of repentance for the remission of sins, agreeable to the covenants and commandments.

For a detailed list of what the various offices of the two priesthoods can and cannot do, see “Lesson 5: Performing Priesthood Ordinances,” Duties and Blessings of the Priesthood: Basic Manual for Priesthood Holders, Part B, 41. http://www.lds.org/ldsorg/v/index.jsp?vg...

According to the above lesson, one must hold the Melchizedek priesthood to stand in for a baby blessing.  But traditionally, they often have an Aaronic priesthood holder hold the microphone for those administering the blessing.  Perhaps this is what your husband was doing?  My parents joined the church the day before my brother was born and I was only 2.  So both my brother and I recieved our baby blessings from the bishop because my father could not recieve the Melchizedek priesthood for a year after his baptism.

  6. To baptize, a worthy male need only the Aaronic Priesthood holding the office of a priest.  Perhaps the Bishop had a problem with your ex.  Who knows, but this is the ecclesiastical answer.

  7. They can baptise if they are a preist. In my ward we just had a girl whose dad had been ordained a priest that day, so he only had the aaronic preisthood. But he was still able to baptise the girl. He couldn't confirm her, though. You have to have the Melchizadek priesthood to do that.

  8. The answers here already are correct, one point is missing that may be pertain to your situation:

That is to preform any ordinance a priesthood holder needs to have either a temple recommend or a ordnance recommend from his Bishop.

No recommend of these 2 listed, no ordnance can be preformed.

That said to complete the answer, one holding the office of Priest in arronic priesthood can preform a Baptism with the permission of local leaders.

  9. Yes, if the Aaronic preisthood holder has been ordained a priest, he can baptise.  If your husband could stand in the baby blessings, he was ordained a priest, and so he could have baptised your child, provided he was active and in good-standing with the church.  All priesthood ordinances must be approved by the bishop, so he has the final call on whether or not a priesthood holder can perform an ordinance.
