Question:

Mormons: What did you think about the South Park episode?

On one hand they were clearly ridiculing the religion, as they've done with everything else. It did end on a rather favorable note though, uncharacteristically so for South Park. What did you think about it? And what would you say was the reaction from Mormons overall?

  1. I don't think there was anything wrong with it. I was really laughing when I began watching it, thinking wow we made it on South Park. and...some mormons really need to lighten up...its ok really, people have their "views"and we believe what we believe and thats ok! Did you really think that someone was seeking answers about Mormons from southpark, come on now... LDS convert five years :)

  2. You could ask that same question of Catholics, Jews and just about everyone else except scientologist. They truly hate scientologist, but everyone else they are just being funny. I love their attitude - cuz yeah scientologists really are a joke, even more so then the others. I think they're right on about everything. One of them was raised Mormon and it influences his humor. I don't think he's out to slam his whole family.

  3. I never got around to seeing it, but it certainly made a lot of people curious and willing to clear up a few misconceptions they had about the religion. All my non-member friends were asking questions about my beliefs.

All of my member friends thought it was hilarious. They're all big fans of the show, too. I've never been able to get into it, personally.

In the end, it's a comedy show. Anyone with a sense of humor should be able to roll with the punches and laugh at themselves when their own group stands in as the target.

  4. the first part of the MORMON south park episode seems straightforward but after a while it completely distorts the testimony of joseph smith and the true religious beliefs.

  5. It was a razor blade hidden in an apple.  It was all sweet and good except for the part where they portray Martin Harris as a dupe who trusted Joseph Smith without ever seeing the Book of Mormon.  In real life he did see the Book of Mormon, and the angel Moroni, and heard the voice of God declare the translation to be correct.  He was one of five different people who saw the Book of Mormon and the angel Moroni, and who testified about it until the day they died.

  6. I find it really funny.

Then again I'm not a "devout" mormon.

  7. It is pretty stupid (of course I think that about South Park in general).  If you are trying to find out about the Mormon church, you have not done it by watching the show.  It, as usual with South Park, takes just enough facts to make it sound like they know what they are talking about, and mixes them in with a bunch of garbage and lies and rumors to make it "funny" and yet misleading.  For instance, it was not just Joseph Smith that saw the plates, the Book of Mormon closely coincides with the Bible, and he did not receive the plates the first time he claimed to see God but rather many years later after many communions with him.

(I say claimed because while I have much evidence that the church is true, I am still not fully convinced, I have stopped going and now would be considered a non-member)

  8. What do you mean uncharacteristically!? They always end on a good note. Watch more South Park episodes then you'll understand.
