Allan Donald, the South African bowling coach, has shown faith in the right-arm fast bowler Morne Morkel. The bowling coach believes that the pacer is just going through a lean patch and will bounce back soon.
Asserting that Morkel is simply a spell away from returning to his optimum best, Donald said, “Its one spell away for him. We tinkered with a few things after the day's play and I think he's confident enough now to take it further.”
The former South African cricketer divulged that Morkel lost his rhythm for a while but seems to be back on the right track.
Comparing the gangly pacer with himself, Donald said, “I put myself in Morné's http://www.senore.com/Cricket/James-Peter-Hewitt-c66001 a lot of the time. I was a rhythm bowler and a confidence bowler and I needed to bowl a lot to have that confidence to bowl in certain areas with
good pace, and Morné is exactly the same. He's a world-class bowler and we're confident it's just one spell.”
Morkel, along with http://www.senore.com/Cricket/DW-Steyn-c1409, has been at the forefront of the South African bowling attack. The duo have been swathing through opposition batting line-ups since a year and a half. However, Morkel hasn’t been himself lately.
The 6ft 7in bowler’s performance dipped in the last couple of Tests. Morkel only managed to take two wickets in the second Test match against http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Sri-Lanka-c758,
he only managed one.
Because of this lacklustre performance, Morkel has slipped down in International Cricket Council's Test rankings for bowlers. The South African is now placed at the fifth position with 734 rating points, as opposed to 776 points
when he ranked third on November 9, 2011.
The 27-year-old placer in the final XI is not under threat at this point of time but there are guys in the roster, who are always knocking at the door. Donald believes that such tough competition is good for the team, as players
don’t become complacent.
The coach said, “It also keeps everyone on their toes and the challenges for places are what it's all about.”
