Morne van Wyk believes that he can give his best while playing at the top order for South Africa – Cricket News Update

Morne van Wyk believes that he can give his best for the South African team while playing at the top order, adding that it will also make room for an extra all-rounder.

The batsman was part of the International Cricket Council (ICC) World Cup 2011 campaign, where he was selected as a back-up wicket-keeper and batted in five matches out of the seven played.

The veteran has been engaged in First-class cricket for 14 years and has also been part of the South African squad in the 1998 Under-19 World Cup. Wyk is considered as an attacking player, who played as opener in the limited-over matches for Free-State and
has earned a great name at the domestic level.

Wyk not only serves as a useful batsman, but his glove-work has also earned him much respect while playing for Free State, who assigned him a regular spot as a wicket-keeper in both formats of the game during 2002-03.

His skills grabbed the attention of national selectors and ultimately he was called for South Africa’s One-Day squad to play in the triangular series in England, in 2003. Wyk made his One-Day international debut in the final game against England at Lord’s,
which the Proteas lost by seven wickets.

After Mark Boucher though, AB de Villiers is serving South Africa as a wicket-keeper as well, but still Wyk believes that it is the right time for him to come forward.

Wyk admitted de Villiers’ skills and said that he is happy to be his back-up.

"It will come down to whether he wants to keep or spread the workload,” he added

Even at the age of 32, the player is enthusiastic to offer much to the South African team at the international level. "I am more keen to play international cricket now than I have ever been because I've had a taste of it," he shared.

Playing in 13 One-Day Internationals, Wyk has scored 331 runs at an average of 27.58, including three fifties. The player made his Twenty20 debut in 2007 against Pakistan and featuring in two Twent20 Internationals, he has amassed a total of 68 runs at an
average of 34, including one fifty.
