When I first get up I feel really low and depressed but over the period of the morning it works off. What could be causing it? Anyone else have this too?

Thanks

  1. Heck yes, i do sometimes!!!

  2. I suffer from depression. It's worst in the winter for me.

Try taking a herbal tablet like St John's Wort (check with your doctor or pharmacist first) It may be that you have a lot on your mind and your thinking a lot before you go to sleep.Read a book and have a warm milky drink before bed.You just need to try different things to make you feel better.Exercise can also help, it makes you feel better about yourself in many ways.Swimming helps me.

  3. i get depressed in the morning all the time and it eases off during the morning! my mum avoids me in the morning im that bad!

  4. It could be caused by a lot of things.  Maybe you aren't getting enough sleep, or the sleep you do get isn't deep enough.  You might even have a mild food allergy that makes you feel that way!

I have never been a morning person, and if I'm going to feel depressed, that is the most common time of day.  For me, it helps to try to get a good night's sleep.  My doctor also gave me a supplement called 5HTP.  He said my seratonin level is low and this will help me feel less sad.  He also said my adrenal glands are burnt out from years of stress and he put me on a special anti-inflamation diet.

I know I'm going into a lot of detail, but the point is, it's complicated. My suggestion is for you to ask your doctor to run some tests and inlude hormones and adrenal levels.  You might just need a supplement like me, or your doc may need to prescribe something--or it could be something totally different.  My doc told me that part of my problem is that I'm unhappy with my job and I won't get totally better until I find another job.  I'm working on that part too!

There's no reason to go through life feeling miserable.

  5. For the majority of people with depression the mornings especially first thing are worse, and there is a reason for this.

Everyday you start from scratch; even if you have had a good day the day before if you look at the next day it will still look dark.  This means that you can go to bed after a good day feeling positive and happy about life but will still feel low the next morning.  Gradually as time goes on and you have more good days than bad the mornings do get a little bit easier.

That's why it has to be one day at a time, so that you get up feeling c**p/low, somehow you motivate yourself to do something which will hopefully uplift you or make you feel a bit more positive and you have then turned the day around ie what could have been a bad one has become a good one.  The further through the day it gets and you haven't managed to turn it around the harder it gets and you just accept it is a bad one, get through it and get to the back of it.  Everyone has bad days but when you are depressed they are just one h**l of a lot worse.

That's why if you do enjoy your job to a degree it's worth pushing yourself in there even if you feel low when you go in - I've lost count of how many times I start the day feeling tearful but then get into work and have quite a good laugh with my colleague's and the tearful feeling gradually wears off and it turns into a good day.  Of course, it doesn't work every time; if I go in and lots of people are off it can be a low day.

Keeping busy especially if you do something you get a feel good factor from helps to lift you hence why so many people on here say they feel better as the morning goes on.

  6. I'm like that too. Have had to take lots of days off work sick as a result, not good. One tip is to avoid using computers or watching tv after about 9.30 at night. It can lead to poor quality sleep which I think is a contributing factor. Even if you are sleeping for long enough it may be poor quality.

Also ask yourself is there something you dread doing every day and try changing it..

  7. OMG! yes it goes like this waking up extreme anxiety excessive sweating and as the day moves on it tapers away i hate it ! Your not alone my dr said a low dose of a benzopine (ativan etc.) can ease it i have and it actually made me feel a little better i don't know what causes it maybe during sleep your brain goes into some kind of panic dream that you cant recall and you feel it when you wake up but it wheres of only to happen again

  8. WOW. You sound like a mirror image of mine. I have Depession & when i wake up in the mornings i feel so depressed & moody like i start thinking how i have to have a shower in a minute & shave in the shower & i dont feel upto doing it & then i have to look for some clothes to wear & then do my hair & all sorts of things but then i find after an hr or so it gets better then at night times im OK, But yes. . mornings for me is a NIGHTMARE, I know how you feel. because mornings really get me down HEAPS & alot of the time.
