Morning session day three of 2011 Australian Age Group Swimming Championship- Boys events
15-year-old Jesse King and 14-year-old Sam Biddle makes a splash in the preliminary rounds of their respective events at the 2011 Australian Age Group Swimming Championship. The championship is a six-day competition and it will help Swimming Australia to
identify fresh Australian swimmers.
The session included the preliminary rounds of the Boys’ 100m breast-stroke, 200m butterfly, 100m back-stroke, 200m freestyle, 400m freestyle and the 100m freestyle in different age group categories.
The first event of the session was the 100m breast-stroke, where the 15-year-old Jesse King proved his fastest qualification into the finals by clocking a time of 1:06.60 minutes. With his solid performance, King was comfortably ahead of Schroeder and James
McKechnie, who surfaced second and third in 1:07.00 and 1:07.43 minutes.
In the 200m butterfly, 14-year-old Hunter’s Sam Biddle demonstrated a wondrous swim, clocking a time of 2:13.01 minutes and out-touched his closest swimmers, Ryan Leonard and Andrew Walker, who got to the wall in 2:13.18 and 2:13.25 minutes.
Moments Later, Wests Illawarra’s 18-year-old David McKeon occupied the fastest swimmer seat into the finals by reporting 1:50.5 minutes. Ridge Grimsey and Kenneth To followed him into the finals by clocking a time of 1:52.51 and 1:52.59 minutes.
After a few minutes, the arena witnessed the stunning swim of 16-year-old East Brisbane’s Robert Gerlach, who claimed the fastest qualification spot in a time of 56.90 seconds. His time was almost 2 seconds under last year’s titleholder, Rogers Cooper, who
clocked 58.29 seconds for the gold medal. He was followed by Core Main and Cameron McEvoy, who posted a challenging time of 57.50 and 58.06 seconds.
Then, 15-year-old Lachlan Sweeney of Cotton Tree displayed an astonishing swim in the 400m freestyle. Sweeney, who controlled the race from the very start, clocked a time of 4:07.15 minutes for the top qualification seat. He was followed by Miami’s Jordan
Harrison and NZL’s Taylor, who touched the wall for second and third fastest qualification in a time of 4:07.46 and 4:09.98 minutes.
The final event of the session was the 100m freestyle heats in the age group of 14-year-olds. Peter Topalidis of Auburn touched the wall first in a speedy 54.32 seconds. In the mean time, Australian Crawl’s Mitch Phillips and Cherrybrook’s Angus Hannan touched
the wall for second and third fastest qualification spots, clocking a time of 54.37 and 54.53 seconds. HKG’s Ka Kwong remained only 0.20 seconds slower from the third spot and clocked 54.73 seconds for fourth qualification.
These remarkable young athletes will once again compete with each other in the finals of their respective events while the championship will conclude on Saturday after the completion of all swimming events in each age group.
