Morning session of the NCAA Division III Swimming and Diving Championships – Day one
The 2011 NCAA Division III Swimming and Diving Championships are being hosted in Knoxville, Tennessee at the Allan Jones Aquatic Center from 23 to 26 March. Morning session of the championship concluded with the performance of male and female swimmers in
the preliminary rounds of the 500-yard freestyle, 200-yard individual medley, 50-yard freestyle and 200-yard medley relay.
In the women’s 500-yard freestyle, Elizabe Horvat qualified as the fastest swimmer into the finals in 4:50.38 minutes. She was followed by the Kendra Stern and the NCAA record holder for the same event, Carolin Wilson, in a time of 4:50.62 and 4:50.80 minutes
respectively. Wilson made the record for the event in a time of 4:45.47 minutes on 17th March 2010. In the men’s corner, Ry Lichtenfels dominated the same event in a wonderful time of 4:24.95 ahead of Allen Weik and Gary Roberson, who followed him
for the second and third fastest qualification in a time of 4:26.96 and 4:27.60 minutes respectively.
The next event of the day was the women’s 200-yard individual medley, where Loga Todhunter appeared as the fastest swimmer after her thrilling time of 2:01.93 in the preliminary rounds. April Whitley and Emil Schroeder followed her for the second and third
fastest qualification in a time of 2:03.07 and 2:04.53 respectively.
In the men’s corner, Peter O’Brien produced a wonderful swim of 1:50.52 minutes in the 200-yard individual medley to qualify as the fastest swimmer. He was followed by Christop Depew and Step Clendenin, who touched the wall in 1:50.59 and 1:50.67 respectively.
The fifth event of the day was the women’s 50-yard freestyle, which was dominated by Amanda Croix in a time of 23.05 seconds, a time slightly off the NCAA record of 22.71 seconds. Laura Pierce and Kaila Umbarger followed her to the finishing wall in a time
of 23.15 seconds and 23.18 seconds. David Somers ruled the equivalent event in the men’s corner with a timing of 20.08 seconds and was followed by Colin Ohning and Wya Ubellacker in a time of 20.13 and 20.39 respectively.
The next race was the women’s 200-yard medley relay, where the team from Emory touched the wall first in 1:41.99 ahead of Denison and Williams, who came in at 1:42.76 and 1:43.32 respectively. Finally, the last event of the day was the men’s 200-yard medley
relay, where Kenyon qualified as the fastest team in a time of 1:28.85 that was well ahead of the Denison and UW-Stevens Point, who touched the wall in 1:30.61 and 1:31.11 respectively.
