Morning session on day two of the 2011 Telstra Australian Swimming Championship - Recap
The morning session on day two of the 2011 Telstra Australian Swimming Championship has concluded with the preliminary rounds of some events. These Australian Championships will serve as a trial for Australian swimmers to represent their country at the World
Championships in Shanghai, this July.
The session included the heats of the Women’s 100m backstroke, 100m breast-stroke and 1500m freestyle along with the Men’s 200m freestyle and 100m backstroke.
In the Women’s 100m backstroke, Belinda Hocking dominated the event under the FINA selection criteria of 1:00.40 minutes. Hocking posted a wonderful time of 1:00.17 minutes leaving behind Peters Wester’s Meagen Nay and Brothers’s Emily Seebohm, who clocked
a time of 1:01.42 and 1:00.52 minutes, respectively.
The next event was the Men’s 200m freestyle, where Ryan Napoleon once again dominated the distant freestyle swim with his timing of 1:49.31 minutes. Napoleon, who already holds the crown of the 400m freestyle, is now the fastest swimmer into the semi-final
and only two steps away to conquer another title. Miami’s Thomas Fraser Holmes and Peters Wester’s Kenrick Monk followed him for the second and third fastest qualification in a time of 1:49.40 and 1:49.40 minutes, respectively.
In the Women’s 100m breast-stroke, Central Aquatic’s Sally Foster emerged as the fastest swimmer to qualify into the semi-finals in a time of 1:08.45 minutes. Her time placed her slightly ahead of Nunawading’s Sara Katsoults and Melbourne’s Emily Selig,
who touched the wall for the second and third fastest spot in a time of 1:08.97 and 1:09.53 minutes, respectively.
Next was the Men’s 100m backstroke event, which witnessed the gruelling efforts of Benjamin Treffers and Ashley Delaney to qualify as the fastest swimmers into the semi-finals. Treffers after a neck-to-neck race with Delaney, managed to out-touch him in
the last few metres and reported a time of 54.87 seconds against his opponent’s 54.94 seconds. Hayden Stoeckel secured the third fastest qualification by touching the wall in a time of 55.33 seconds.
The last event of the session was the Women’s 1500m freestyle that saw Melissa Gorman as the fastest swimmer to qualify into the semi-final with a timing of 16:33.82 minutes. Gorman touched the wall comfortably ahead of Bonn MacDonald and Eric Kelley, who
touched the wall in 16:38.59 and 16:52.44 minutes, respectively.
The semi-finals of the same event will be conducted on the day’s second session. After the event, the swimmers will only be a step away to qualify themselves for the 2011 World Championships in Shanghai, this July.
