Morocco wins CAVB Zonal Phase Continental Beach Volleyball Cup
The Confederation Africaine de Volleyball (CAVB) recently organised the Zonal Phase Tournament of Continental Beach Volleyball Cup in Free Town, Sierra Leone from July 3-5. A total of 35 African countries are vying for slots in the upcoming 2012 London Olympic
Games. Each country is allowed to send two teams (per gender) in the competition. The participating countries have divided into five major groups, which are further subdivided into 10 sub-zonal groups. According to the set formula of CAVB, successful teams
of the sub-zonal phase will advance to the Zonal phase.
In the recent memory, the sub-zonal phase of Pool A was staged in Sierra Leone. The tournament welcomed teams from following 7 countries:

Cape Verde Gambia Guinea Bissau Guinea Liberia Morocco Senegal
The women’s and men’s teams from Morocco pushed everyone behind and climbed up to the top.
The three-beach volleyball activity in Sierra Leone successfully completed its run. The Deputy Minister of Youth Development and Sports attended the closing ceremony of the event. He was happy to see the progress and development of volleyball in the area.
During the sub-zonal tournament in Sierra Leone, hundreds of spectators of all age categories showed up.
Women’s section
In the women’s division, host players of the home country Sierra Leone and Morocco clawed their way to the in finals. Team Morocco was represented by duo of Atouli and Fanid, while tandem of Ettaya and Filseroual played under the flag of Sierra Leone. The
Moroccan side was comprised experienced players. On the other hand, it was historic achievement for Sierra Leone to be featured in the finals. Moroccan pairing defeated the home duo and seized the gold-medal. Team from Sierra Leona was contended with the 2nd-position
finish. Sierra Leone women got their hands on the silver medal which is the first ever medal in the volleyball history of this West African country.
In addition to the top-two finishers of the tournament, teams from Cape Verde and Guinea Conakry were also promoted to the second round of zonal phase. Quite similarly, four teams from each zonal group will qualify for the next stage of the tournament.
Men’s section
In the men’s tournament, teams from Morocco and Cape Verde settled for the final match. The cracking final match spanned over three sets and went through many ups and downs. Cape Verde Team put up a great fight but ultimately gave in. Moroccan tandem posted
2-1 (17-21, 21-17, and 15-8) victory over opponents and secured the gold medal. It took the fifty-seven minutes to defeat the Cape Verde Team.
