Morpheus gives Lady Cecil a strong result in ABG Law Classic Stakes – Horseracing news
Morpheus made Lady Cecil proud by winning the ABG Law Classic Stakes on Thursday. This was the first ever victory for the half brother of Frankel and there could have been no better tribute to the late Sir Henry Cecil than this.
On the winning stallion, Lady Cecil said, “He did it so well. He's taken time to get his act together but that was very pleasing and James (jockey) gave him a great ride. The win was for Henry and also all the staff, who have been so supportive.”
The British Horseracing Authority (BHA) had granted a temporary licence to the widow of Sir Cecil, who was one of the finest trainers ever and proved to be an inspiration for millions of people involved in the sport.
Although Lady Cecil won another race on Thursday, she would have been happy with what Morpheus had achieved. He had appeared in three more events prior to that, but failed to make an impression in any of them. He did come close to winning once, but had to
settle for the runner up spot in the end.
Things changed dramatically for the young stallion, as he dominated the proceedings from the start until the end in the ABG Law Classic Stakes. He entered the competition as a favourite and gained lead pretty early. He did make one bad mistake in the middle
section of the race, but had left his rivals way behind until them, which allowed him to stay ahead. In the end, he was victorious by four and a half lengths, which would have given him immense confidence.
Lady Cecil will now be eying to deliver strong results at the Royal Ascot, which was her husband’s favourite venue. She will not find that easy, as there will be some fierce challengers participating in the event including the Queen’s stallions.
Johnny Weatherby, Her Majesty's representative at Ascot, was looking forward to the challenge, but paid tribute to Sir Cecil by saying, “It is no secret that Royal Ascot was his favourite meeting of the year and we felt it was fitting to honour his achievements
here next week, and remember the passing of one the greatest figures that the world of sport has ever seen.”
Jockeys representing the Queen will be wearing black armbands during the races at the Royal Ascot.
