Question:

Morphine pump and driving?

If someone with a terminal illness has a morphine pump, are they supposed to be driving? Are they considered under the influence if they are? And if they were to get into a accident, would it automatically be their fault if they are considered under the influence?

Thank you!

  1. It's a peculiar situation. Some overzealous DA could actually prosecute. On the other hand, the medical literature is solid: it's safer to drive on a morphine pump than it is after taking a Benadryl. While the use of narcotics acutely can be a significant impairment, those in this circumstance, with small doses on a regular basis, are not significantly impaired. They're as a group better drivers than stone-cold teenagers.

  2. Danielle there are not too many doctors that would not have the licenses taken away from patients with this form of pain management.  Insurance companies would certainly not want to be responsible for people driving under the influence or a morphine pump.

  3. Any kind of morphine, or narcotic, opiate,  will make you sleepy. Make sure you don't do this. You can seriously harm yourself.
