NetherRealm, the studio behind the iconic Mortal Kombat series is considering taking on a number of different projects away from the series that it has become known for.
One of the things that video game developers have in common with authors is the fact that, much like the latter, they become associated with and become known for their work. Much like J.K Rowling and George R. R. Martin are known for the Harry Potter series
and the Song of Ice and Fire respectively, studios such as Naughty Dog is known for the Uncharted series and Bethesda for the Elder Scrolls.
Along the same lines is perhaps one of the most iconic series in video game history, Mortal Kombat, which has been developed by NetherRealm. The game has become a part of popular culture with two movies having been released based on the game over the years.
Now though it seems that the studio behind the series is looking into other projects outside the Mortal Kombat universe.
Ed Boon, the studio head at NetherRealm confessed, “We want out studio to do more than just make Mortal Kombat games.”
The statement could have sent ripples in the gaming community on its own, but there was more, “We love making them but we also want to do different types of games. Different genres, different IPs.”
NetherRealm is not the first studio to make such a statement as Insomniac Games, known for their PlayStation exclusive Resistance trilogy, is also looking to move in a different direction. At the same time Naughty Dog is also branching out with a new IP,
The Last of Us.
There are even rumours that Rocksteady, the studio behind the recent Batman: Arkham games, is considering bringing a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles game to the market.
NetherRealm, incidentally, also worked on Batman: Arkham City Lockdown, which was released for the iOS, so they are familiar with trying out different things.
However, he did point out that this did not mean the end of the legendary series they have been developing all these years.
He stated, “We’re going to continue in that direction, but I would be surprised if we never did another Mortal Kombat game again.”
