Morten Orum Madsen following Thomas Bjorn’s path
Denmark’s Morten Orum Madsen comes from the same country as the 13-time European Tour winner Thomas Bjorn.
He counts his compatriot as a perfect role model and this season he will be looking to follow in the footsteps of his idol as he plays his rookie season on the European Tour.
At just 24 years of age, the golf world is Madsen’s oyster and he has all what it takes to be a superstar.
Impressive amateur career? Finished third at the 2008 European Amateur Championship, won the Houborg Open and the Wibroe Cup in 2008, won the Danish Amateur Stroke Play event in 2009, appeared in the Jacques Leglise Trophy and the Eisenhower Trophy; Check.
Challenge Tour success? He recorded 11 top-20 finishes in his rookie season in 2012, and finished 19th in the Challenge Tour Rankings; Check.
There are still many, much more esteemed accomplishments to achieve if Madsen has to emulate his hero.
For that purpose, he appears to be moving on the right track, as the Dane mounted a title challenge at the Nelson Mandela Championship presented by ISPS Handa earlier this month.
The inaugural edition of the Nelson Mandela Championship was the 2013 European Tour’s season-opener and was shortened to two rounds, after the inclement weather forced the game to suspend several times during the week.
Madsen fired a six-under par two-round score to finish tied for the fourth position on the leaderboard.
He is now sure to be compared with his Silkeborg native, Bjorn, in the time to come, and feels proud of that fact.
“I have spoken to him several times and he was kind enough to play a practice round with me at The Open in the summer so I know him but not really well or anything,” he said.
He added, “He has always been my idol though, being from the same club and all the success he has had on The European Tour, everything about how he approaches the game and how he works and how he prepares for tournaments. I've always been very inspired by
him so I try and emulate some of those things and apply them to my game”.
