Morten Orum Madsen leads after round one of the ALLIANZ Open de Lyon
Morten Orum Madsen fired a six-under par 65 in the opening round of the ALLIANZ Open de Lyon, to take the outright lead on Thursday, October 4, 2012.
Madsen currently looks forward to winning the first European Challenge Tour title of his career this week. So far, he is moving on the right track, as he birdied seven holes against a lone bogey to make a strong start at Golf de Gouverneur.
The Dane is currently enjoying a great form on the tour. He has recorded four top-15 finishes in the last five tournaments that he played.
The consistent performances also took him to the 14th place in the European Challenge Tour Rankings.
Virtually, he looks to retain his position in the top-20 till the end of the current season, which will guarantee him a full-time playing card for the 2013 European Tour season.
However, he does not want to take any risks and plans to confirm his berth on the bigger stage by winning the competition this week.
Despite conceding a bogey on the third hole, he did not lose his temperament and made a strong comeback by recording four straight birdies, starting from the fifth hole.
The back nine of the course witnessed him play a flawless game and he managed to add another three shots to his scorecard.
At the end of the round, he was holding back a pack of five players sharing the second spot on the leaderboard.
“I played really well,” said the 24 year old. “I hit a bad shot for that bogey at the third but after that it was really good - I played some nice shots and putted really well”.
He continued, “I made a lot of putts from 10 to 15 feet but I hit it close a lot too and when I missed the greens my chip shots were to tap-in range so it was nice not to have to work too hard. It was just really solid overall”.
After contending against some of best players in Russia and Kazakhstan, he took a couple of weeks off and returned to action this week, in a bid to feel refreshed for the last four tournaments on the tour.
