Question:

Mosler floor safe?

When we bought our house a few years back there was a round type in-floor safe that had no handle. When we called the agent to ask if he had the dial for it, he said "What safe?" Thanks, never mind.

Since then I've worked on it various ways off & on. I had emailed a while back with the model#, but they said they couldn't identify it exactly because the model covered enough years that 3 different types of dials were used with different amount of #s on it. Besides, how would I reattach one.

Lately I cut & broke off the concrete from around the top of it and there's a big square steel plate. Now that's all clear, I whacked at it and it's won't loosen up & just pull out. anything underneath this? Should I just go back the angle grinder?

  1. After installing many in floor safes, I can tell you, you went to an awful lot of trouble to try to remove this safe. My question is, Why? The bottom of this steel safe flanges out deliberately, so it doesn't come out. If the thin metal cover was missing and you didn't like it visible, you could have purchased a replacement cover from a locksmith for a few dollars, and then put rug over the area. I would have recommended you call a locksmith/safe technician to get the safe unlocked. Then I would have purchased a new safe top/dial and have use of the safe.

    Good Luck,  ;-)

  2. More than likely, the safe was put in when the house was built. If that's the case, then the metal plate is probably anchored in the concrete. If that is the situation, then there are only two options. You can take an angle grinder and grind it down level with the concrete. Another option would be possible if you can gain access to a cutting torch. It'd be quicker to use the cutting torch and "wash" the metal away until it's even with the concrete. Afterwards, you probably want to hide it by using a throw rug or carpeting the room maybe.
