Question:

Mosquito Identification

I recently saw a very interesting mosquito and I was curious as to if anyone could identify it. Unfortunately, I don't have a picture of it, but I can explain what it looked like.

It was black and red with a primarily red body. It's feet had little black boots on it. Not very long legs, I'd say about half the size of the regular mosquito legs. Thick, dragonfly-like wings, but not very long. A very thick body, antennae that were not knotted at the end. and a short sucker instead of the long mosquito sucker.

I do wish I had scored a picture of the creature before it left, it was quite magnificent looking, but that was not possible.

I was slightly worried that it was a blacklisted insect that caught a trip from africa, so i was afraid to go closer....

Any help would be lovely

  1. Sounds like it probably wasn't a mosquito at all, but one of any number of other groups of flying insects that look like mosquitoes.
