  1. Get it vaccinated the nonsense about the complications and birth defects were a hoax.  Home made all natural remedies seldom work.  Some in fact have been shown to attract certain species of mosquitoes.

Next I use CDS Permectrin.  It is a pour on and premise spray that works really well for mosquitoes, flies, and ticks.  You also only apply it every two weeks.  Just pour the recommended amount down the center of their back and down their face (7 - 15 ounces if it is a full sized horse)  It works wonders.  I also find pryrethrin sprays to be effective.

Also if you have ponds and stock tanks add goldfish or guppies to keep mosquitoes down.  In a pond with fish already stocked you can add mosquito fish.  They are native to North America and look like female guppies (they are related) but can survive winters here.  They will eat the mosquito larvae, thus reducing the population.  Further north you can use fat head minnows and top minnows.

Encouraging bats, purple martins, barn swallows, and other birds that specialize on flying insect also help.  A barn swallow can kill about 1500 mosquitoes a night.  A purple martin which is bigger can take out 2500.  So these birds are a definite plus to have around.

    Edit

Citronella does not seem to do a good job here.  Its main problem seems to be that it has little effect on deer flies.

  2. I saw a great recipe from someone saying soak some tea bags in water, then add some citronella oil and some garlic. They said it produced a brown liquid that they put in a spray bottle and it worked a treat and she never has to buy fly spray.

I use the citronella and I think its great!

  3. I use Brute Insecticide when the flies/mosquito's are REALLY bad as I don't like using chemicals on my horses (personal preference).  Otherwise I mix a flyspray concoction & put it in a spray bottle & use it whenever, wherever, makes their coat nice & shiny too.  You can include or exclude whatever you like *** next to the must include ingredients.

    Flyspray Recipe

***1 cup Baby oil or Avon Skin so soft

    ***1 cup white vinegar

    ***Good squirt of dish soap

    ***Citronella oil – 1tsp

    Eucalyptus essential oil – 2tsp

Tea tree essential oil – 2tsp

Penny royal essential oil – few drops

Basil essential oil – few drops

Rosemary essential oil – few drops

Neem essential oil – few drops

Lavender essential oil – few drops

Process the following in a blender then strain

    Basil leaves

    Bay leaf

    Black pepper

    Rosemary

    Cloves

    Thyme

***Top it up with wormwood tea - strained (you can substitute for water in a pinch)

Spray over your horse once to twice per day.

    Good luck xoxo

  4. my vet says that she uses a mix with downy and water and it works great.

  5. most at home recipes for bug repellent for horses dont work. my horses wont accept the fact that a spray bottle only helps them, not hurt them so i use wipes instead. i can't remember the name but if you go to the store, look for a black box with yellow and white writing. they are amazing. they're like citronella wipees but dont let your horse sniff it before you rub its legs and underbelly with it because they dont like it and the chemicals are too strong for them to directly inhale it. the chemicals dont hurt them when its on their hair. i was skeptical at first but it really does work and its so easy. you only have to apply it every two or three days. within a minute of putting it on there aren't any bugs including mosquitoes around your horse and your horse will stop the constant stomping. it really does work. and sorry but they're in the barn so i can't remember the name of it but try it!! it works!!

  6. This is just a recipe i was told don't know how well it works for mosquito's but works for flies,

Skin So soft from Avon+ Water + Vinegar
