I like the look of moss between pavers on my patio, but my husband wants to be rid of it. What do you think--moss is cool looking? or moss looks like weeds?

  1. Moss between pavers has its place. If your environment is more of a rustic one, then the moss is a fit.

If you would like to rid the moss, there is a three step process to remove the moss:

    1. Spray the moss with diluted bleach. Let stand for a couple of hours then wash off. Use a jet, high pressure setting on your hose nozzle to spray out the moss.

    2. Once all the moss is removed, add more sand between the joints. I recomend using Quickcrete all-purpose sand for wider joints and Quickcrete medium sand for tighter joints. Both can be found in the concrete section of your local home improvement store.

    3. Once the joints are full with sand, you must prep the sand so that no weeds can ever grow again. You must find a joint stabalizing sealer, like the one offered by http://www.bppro.biz. If you don't want to change the color or schene of the paver, I suggest getting a "natural" joint stabalizing sealer. You can usually, depending where you live, get a gallon of sealer for $40-$50 per gallon and one gallon should cover 150-200 square feet. There are precise directions listed on the container as well as on their website. Once the sand between the joints are sprayed you wont see another weed between the joints for a long, long time. Plus this prevents insect and water irosion.

Here is a video showing you how to install the sealer: http://bppro.biz/blog/how-to-apply/

Your welcome BP Pro. Send me a couple gallons or a free spray cart.

  2. I think it depends on the look of your house overall. Moss looks great with more cottage type houses but if your house is very clean with defined lines moss might not look great with it.

Personally though, I love the way moss looks.

  3. I would prefer keeping the moss. I think that it would look nice on a patio.

  4. Moss between pavers is a terrible idea. I don't know who started this trend, but to me it looks like you couldn't afford to lay the whole patio, just some of it. Also, you get more bugs, etc. on the stones, and who wants to walk on that?

  5. Is your husband prepared to take care of all the weeds that will crop up if the moss is gone? If you have moss, your patio must be heavily shaded. Is your husband planning on redoing the patio? The moss helps keep out the weeds, and allows rain to be absorbed into the ground rather than running off and carrying pollutants with it.

  6. one question -- what will be growing there if the moss is not?  weeds?  how much time do you-all want to spend keeping the weeds out?  moss is beautiful and so uniform it doens't look like weeds....check out some ornamental plants that bloom instead if you like.  Woolly thyme.  Red thyme.  Scotch Moss (not a tru moss, it is gold with white flowers) ?
