Moss for a humid hide?

I hear people mentioning using moss for a humid hide but I am not exactly sure what they are referring to and my local pet store doesn't seem to have anything like this, could someone give me a link showing what it is.I have a leopard gecko and have been using an extra thick layer of damp paper towels as that is what I am using as a substrate in the rest of the tank but I think moss would be much better at holding in the moisture.

  1. Many kudos for using paper towel for the substrate.

Spagnum moss.  Zilla puts out a baked moss premium reptile bedding.

But - I'd suggest you just keep using the paper towels.  I tried the moss several times, and no matter how large or small the gecko (or the hide)  - it just ended up being dug out and a mess in the tank.  All lizards like to dig, if they have something they can dig in.  It's instinct.  They hunt for bugs, etc.

I was worried about the moss being an impaction issue when feeding, so had to clean the tank EVERY NIGHT before feeding.  Ugh.

But yes, I have heard of others using it successfully.  It just didn't work out for me and my Leos.  I only use it now for a laying medium, when one is about to drop her eggs.  And yes, 2/3 of it ends up all over the cage, before she lays.  lol

    Good luck, whatever you decide.
