  1. The Maverick is a plain jane copy of the Mossberg 500.  I believe it is made outside of the USA, but could be wrong.  The early Mavericks had a single post running from the slide to the receiver.  This wasn't good and corrected.

The big difference between the Maverick and the Mossberg proper is the Maverick has the cross-bolt safety in front of the trigger on the trigger guard.  The Moosberg has the correct placement of the safety on the tang.  A more user friendly design for both right and left handed user.

  2. yup the guy above me has it about right...and you cant go wrong with a mossy....great shotguns; reliable, cheap and durable. Go ahead and buy it!

  3. The Mav 88 is made from the same parts, on the same assembly lines, in the same US factory as the Mossy 500.  It's a Mossy 500 for all intents and purposes, just the lesser expensive line.  It comes with black synthetic stocks instead of wood to save costs etc.

All Mossberg barrels fit your gun perfectly so you can switch to a shorter barrel later on if you want.

The only differences that will matter are the location of the safety and the style of forearm used on the Mav.  The safety will only be a problem to you if you're left handed.  You'll have to shift a hand to switch it off when you need it.  Righties can get the safety off with a fingertip without moving their hand.  The other is the forearm.  The Mav uses a one piece forearm without an action slide tube assembly....so if you plan to add an aftermarket forearm or grip, you'll need to pick up a Mossy 500 action slide tube assembly ($15) and replace yours.

The Mav is a rock solid shotgun.  It won't let you down.

  4. This link should explain the Mossberg 88 better than I can.

  5. Yes it is a reasonably priced, smooth action, dependable, well made, durable, rugged, serviceable, life long shotgun.*
