Most Disappointing Starts of the 2011-2012 National Hockey League (NHL) Regular Season –Part 3
Whenever teams are relocated from one city to the other in the National Hockey League (NHL), there are always high expectations in terms of performance as the new season starts with a fresh team on the line-up.
When such teams fail to impress, it is certainly a disheartening situation for the league along with the fans that finally get a chance to witness hockey magic in their city.
Talking about relocated teams, this brings us to our next NHL franchise which has had one of the most disappointing starts of the 2011-2012 NHL regular season.
Winnipeg Jets (Eastern Conference)
Something special with Winnipeg getting a team, which were Atlanta Thrashers relocating to the city, was that the city already had a team in the past, which was one of the most celebrated and thrilling clubs to watch.
Announcing the comeback of Jets, the Winnipeg city and fans were extremely thrilled at the idea of getting their team back in a new way, which obviously had high expectations.
Unfortunately, the Jets were unable to deliver and have so far after the month of October ended, disappointed in every way possible.
Winnipeg had 11 matchups to kick off their season in a good way, but out of those contests, Jets managed to win only four and registered a record of 4-6-1 to end off tied with New Jersey Devils for the 12th number spot in the Eastern Conference,
much lower than expectations.
Even more surprising than that, Winnipeg was not able to win its highly anticipated home season opener against Montreal Canadiens and in return, lost by a disappointing 5-1. Their first win was against Pittsburgh Penguins after their fourth matchup, which
was hard to believe since they are a very tough team.
Some might term Winnipeg’s situation as one with the team still adjusting to the new atmosphere of the city and change in format of games being on the ice with different teammates.
Next month must bring about change for the team otherwise early predictions of the teams failure in the future to secure a playoff spot will certainly not be a surprise to see floating around the league and in the media.
