  1. What a great question. I'm sorry I'm not prepared with a better answer. I read her several times in my youth but that was a long time ago. I have the obvious ones; Mrs. Bennett of course. Mr. Collins? wasn't it?, from P & P. Emma started out a right ****** but she did get better. The thing is, I know that I'm missing some really great ones because that is one of the things I really loved about her. People think they're going to get these little set piece romances when in fact Austen's acerbic wit was one of her greatest strengths and, I think, why she has survived the years so vividly. Between your question and your quote (which I always liked but had forgotten) I'm really feeling like reading her again. Thanks for asking.

By the way, It was sensible to post it here rather than B&A. There you would have gotten 13 teenaged girls all saying they're in love with Mr. Darcy. Too many Austen movies, methinks. Of course here you appear to be stuck with me, rambling aimlessy and with absolutely no incisive wit. Oh well, six of one, half a dozen of another.
