I am a complete beginner in French, and I am planning to stay in France for a year to learn French after my university graduation. What I'm hoping to find is a school that is known to be the most prestigious of all. I've done a bit of research and most people seem to recommend the following:

1.) Alliance Francais (http://www.alliancefr.org)

2.) Université Paris Sorbonne (www.ccfs-sorbonne.fr)

3.) Institut de langue française (www.france-langue.fr)

4.) Institut Parisen (http://www.institut-parisien.com)

Any advice anyone?

  1. France is the best place to learn french - prestige is something I'd like you to define - because to learn french is not a matter of prestige but a matter of personal skill, and work and contact  -

  2. Honestly, you will be fine going anywhere in France to study the language, although the Parisian accent is the most commonly studied (and used in business); therefore, your best bet would be a university in Paris.

As a beginner, you may benefit from doing French studies at the American University of Paris (aup.edu). It is an American run institution and run in English--you must pass an English exam in order to work there.  Advising and administrative things including finding work and housing would be a lot easier for you (and the shock would be a little less!). Also, the American University programs are world renowned, they have incredible guest lecturers and a rigorous academic program.

Université Paris Sorbonne is one of the most prestigious universities in the world--and is in fact the oldest. If you are looking for a good school to impress potential employers, that would be your best bet. Those with even a vague knowledge of French culture and European education will recognize it immediately.

Alliance Français is a great program, however it is not really "prestigious" in the manner that you wish.

  3. Learning french in France for a foreign people is not very easy somehow.

La Sorbonne is prestigious, my wife is American and went in that school for about a year and her french is still terrible

L'ecole de la rue est la plus appropriee et la moins chere

Be pragmatical , motivated and take your time
