Question:

Most accurate baby thermometer?

I've had the worst luck with baby thermometers and have spent a lot of money trying to find one that is actually accurate. I've tried the Braun one that does 1 second readings in the ear--get a different reading every time and it's usually around 94 degrees. I've tried the one you do over the forehead from wal mart, and same results as the Braun one. They are always inaccurate and I always get a different reading every time.

I'm thinking about trying Safety 1st rectal thermometer and see how it goes with that. Does anyone have any other thermometers you have tried with success? One that you don't have to do over and over? If so, can you link a website or picture with it? Thanks.

  1. the only acurrate reading is rectal

  2. The most accurate will always be rectal because ear thermometers change the reading usually when babies have ear infections. Best of Luck!!!

  3. I've always used a regular thermometer to take my daughter's temperature rectally.  The only difference between a rectal therm and a regular on is it has a bump at the end so you don't put it in too far and hurt them.  The doctor's office always just uses a regular on to do it rectally, too.  I just hold it close to the end so it doesn't go in too far and give her a toy so she'll be still.  Rectally is definately the best way to get an accurate reading.  I'm sure the Safety 1st rectal therm will work great.

  4. I have the Safety 1st. And love it.

Digital thermometers are very accurate, fast, and inexpensive. You get a reading in about 30 seconds — a real advantage with a sick and wiggling baby. You can use them rectally or under the armpit. They beep when they're done and are easy to read. On the downside, they become less accurate if dropped, and the batteries can expire at a crucial time.

Ear canal thermometers are the fastest, least obtrusive, and easiest to use once you get the hang of them. You can get a reading in two seconds. The devices are quite accurate for children over one year of age (for younger children, the ear canal may be too narrow and flexible), but they're considerably more expensive than other types of thermometers and may be more difficult to use at home. You must learn to tug correctly on the child's ear to straighten out the ear canal. And if the probe doesn't completely seal the ear canal, the reading may not be accurate.

Temperature strips change color in one to two minutes to register your baby's temperature. They're not at all intrusive — you simply place a strip on the baby's forehead — but they're also not very reliable, so most healthcare providers say not to use them.

  5. The most accurate method of measuring an infant's temperature will always be rectally. It's suggested for the closest reading that you use a rectal thermometer until they are too old to put up with it.
