Most buses don't have seat belts. Anyone know the best way to survive a bus crash?

Will assuming the "crash position" used for plane crashes (hands over head, head down) help in surviving a bus crash since there are no seat belts? Are there such things as portable seat belts and are they tested to be effective? Serious answers only please.

  1. Actually most tour buses do have seat belts.  School buses do not.

For the reasons why not, see http://www.safety-council.org/info/traff...

In 1984, Transport Canada crash tested three different sizes of school buses (one small bus, one van conversion type bus and one large bus), each containing unbelted and belted test dummies. The tests indicated that the use of a lap belt on forward-facing seats could increase the risk of head injuries during a severe frontal collision. In a head-on collision, the most common type of school bus crash, the occupant's head could hit the seat in front, resulting in severe or fatal head and neck injuries.

Further investigation showed that the combination lap and shoulder belts would require stiffer seats, which could increase injury to unbelted students. Moreover, the shoulder belts increased the chance of abdominal injuries because of submarining. Tests showed children would slip down, risking injuries to organs covered by the lap belts.

to Answer you Question will assuming the "Crash positon" if a car hits the bus then no too fast. you dont see it coming a rollover it could be to fast for the Crash positon but you kinda see it comming but you dont eather. so maybe

the crash positon for a air plane you are at two thousand feet now the engine fails now you droping like a rock so you use the crash position and pray and you kiss you *** good bye.

hands over head maybe in a rollover- but not in a buss verses car no there portable seat belts seat belts have to be ancored to the frame of the car bus and truck

and seat belt test have to be effective and has to coply with DOT federal law  and federal safety regulations

  3. Tighten up and brace yourself........

The idea of remaining loose and relaxed is wrong! Contracted muscles protect the bones, discs, ligaments and nerves.

Keep your wrists flat, not bent, to prevent wrist injuries such as carpal tunnel syndrome.

Face forward, look straight ahead and sit squarely against the back of your seat.
