Question:

Most deserving fans?

Are the Cubs fans really the most deserving in all of baseball? I can understand that they are in the middle of an unbelievable drought, however, they are not the only ones...

I went back 30 years (granted, some of these teams havent been around 30 years) and unless I messed up, this is what i came up with:

NO WORLD SERIES WINS LAST 30 YEARS--Cubs, Indians, Rangers, Mariners, Brewers, Astros, Giants, Padres, Rockies, Rays, Nationals/Expos

NO WORLD APPEARANCES LAST 30 YEARS--Cubs, Ranger, Mariners, Expos/Nationals, Rays

NO PLAYOFF SERIES WINS LAST 30 YEARS--Rangers, Rays

NO PLAYOFFS LAST 30 YEARS-Rays (I know they havent been around that long, but still the only one)

OK, I undestand why the Cubbies have so many bandwagoner's, but why do none of these other clubs get any love?

I read a while back that every true baseball fan deserves at least one championship in their lifetime, and maybe that is why, but the Cubs arent the only ones with long drought.

  1. Well i deserve new shoes, and new clothes

but reality is I'm not going to get them at the moment

you work for what you want , and hope it happens

  2. Because all the Cubs fans think their going to win it all and sweep everyone... they think their a perfect baseball team.

  3. I hear you, I cant imagine myself being in the shoes of some of those fans, I have a great deal of respect for any fan that can stick it out through those kind of constant let downs.

  4. who cares the championship doesnt go to the most deserving fans. it goes to the best team at that time

  5. To even include the Rays on this since you are talking about long droughts is pretty insane...I will give you the other teams but the Rays were created in 1998 and don't really have that many true fans...plus 30 years without a World Series title is a lot different than 100 years.

  6. it's Chicago and it's the Cubs...they have a huge fan base.

the Rays and nationals can't even get 30,000 people in their ball park consistently

  7. It's because it's the longest. If there was one team with 95 years and one with 100 year drought you'd still hear about the 100 year drought more than the 95, but to a lesser extent.

You're kind of comparing apples to oranges. 100 years vs 30 years is like WORLDS apart. Just think, people lived their whole lives and died at the age of 90 without seeing the Cubbies win. 86 years for the sox was terrible, but the Cubbies are even worse!

Plus, Tampa Bay has NEVER been a playoff team let alone a championship team. The Cubbies have been to the Playoffs many years in the 100 year drought. And they always hve collosal downfalls hwen they get knocked out (hello steve bartman). That's why they get the attention.

  8. It's because none of those aother teams are in as big of a market, and none are as big of baseball towns.

If the Yankees went 20 years without a WS win(which they might be headed towards) there would be just as much drama as with the cubs 100 years

  9. I'm a big-time Mariners fan, so this is going to be completely biased, but you asked for it.

Seattle started out with the Pilots, but because of financial difficulties lost them after only one season. After that, we didn't have any major league team for 7 years, until the Mariners arrived.

Of course, for the first 18 years the Mariners weren't worth watching at all. More people attended the "Free Funny Nose Glasses Night" promotion game, than came to see Gaylord Perry get his 300th win.

Then 1995 comes around, and we turn ourselves around, finally making something worthwhile. Eventually, we lose in the Playoffs.

Now we reach 2001, where we tie the record for most wins in a season, 116. That was the best team the Mariners ever had, and most likely ever will.

Of course, within 6 years, Griffey, A-Rod, Freddy Garcia, Jamie Moyer, Dan Wilson, John Olerud, Randy Johnson, Edgar Martinez, Buhner, Omar Vizquel, and countless others who helped shape the team have either retired, or been traded away for unheard of second rate players.

Now, at 2008, we are going into our 5th or so straight season below .500. Nearly half of our pitching staff is on the DL, and we are left to call players up from our AAA team in Tacoma, who nobody has ever heard of, and definitely needed a couple more seasons in AAA.

We got our hopes up for Felix Hernandez, and besides all his strike-outs he racks up, he turned out to be somewhat average. Again, we get our hopes up this year for Eric Bedard, and he hardly gives anything to show for it.

We have had 3 different managers in the past 2 seasons, offed our general manager, and released about half the team this season, and have gained nothing.

Besides several glorious moments over the years, the Mariners have been an utter failure for 30 years, gaining their 31st this season. These fans are nearly suicidal.

  10. Maybe it's because it's the longest drought in baseball.  Maybe because they've had numerous teams that were extremely talented and somehow found a way to lose and break their fans hearts.  I couldn't have said it better then Fozzy.  I feel like I've been waiting a long time to see a Cubs World Series (27 years), but I haven't waited nearly as long as a lot of Cubs fans.  My grandfather was born and has since died, he never got to see a Cubs World Series.  My father is the same way, only he hasn't even seen a World Series appearance by the Cubs.  Other teams have droughts as well, but nothing that's remotely close to the kind the Cubs have.  I can almost guarantee that no other teams fans have family members going through entire lifetimes never seeing a championship won or even an appearance in a title game.  The Indians are the next longest drought at 60 years, that's not long enough for someone to go a lifetime without seeing a championship.  Just think of the difference there, the Indians last won in 1948, the Cubs last was in 1908, huge difference.  I mean h**l the Indians last World Series victory was after the Cubs last World Series appearance in 1945.

Also, I agree with JT-24, to even include the Rays in this conversation is insane.  They have no fanbase at all.  Look at the Marlins, they've won 2 World Series since the start of their franchise and they still can't even sell out half of their stadium.

  11. Every kind and courteous fan deserves a World Series winner.

  12. Keep in mind that 100 always seems like a milestone number. Somehow it seems to be greatly larger then 99 is. That's why prices in stores usually end in  $ .99 - people subconsciously think it's a lot cheaper then if it were a penny more.

As a life long, die hard Cubs fan who remembers when they were no league championship series, no DH, only one stadium indoors and with AstroTurf, and no such thing as "set up men" and "closers" (they were simply called relievers back then) I do feel that those of us who have been following the team for as long as we have are maybe slightly more deserving. While there are certainly fans of other teams that have waited as long as I have (I was born the same year as the Astros - and can share their suffering) , they for the most part don't have their teams drought shoved down their throats constantly by the media and fans of other teams. I can't wait to see if those same people will get on the Indian's case as much when and if the Cubs win a Series.

But, I do find it incredibly insulting for someone who is about 15 years old, or is a bandwagon fan that can't tell you a single player who played for the Cubs before the year 2000, to somehow portray themselves as a "long suffering" Cubs fan.

And realistically, since there are 30 teams in the major leagues now, winning a World Series every 30 years is actually the statistical norm.

  13. Cubs are a bigger team, often have better players and a bigger payroll. Chicago is a baseball town. the other teams aren't mentioned b/c unlike the Cubs, they're almost NEVER playoff contenders.
