  1. depends on your strong points for me the physical part was the hardest.i have a hard time with chin ups.i went in 1993 but prefer not to mention what department for privacy reasons.everyone is different so you might not have a hard time at all.the non physical aspects were a breeze for me others had a very hard time with it.some people couldnt fire a weapon to save their lives let alone anyone else's.just dont let yourself get freaked out

  2. common sense and good judgement...you either have or you don't.

  3. Milwaukee Police, it was the mental stuff they put you thru, but after awhile it got kind of funny with them yelling at you trying to pretend they were army drill sergeants. Just keep in mind they are trying to build your mind up for the streets.

Good luck and have fun!!! Oh and enjoy the academy because you will miss it once you graduate.

  4. I went thru a 8 week Probation Officer academy that really focused on Academics (15-20 test a week) but now I'm trying to be a regular cop and I know other than the physical stuff the academics will be a huge issue. I would also say the yelling and screaming but if you are previous military like me than we all know it's a simple game.

  5. The hardest part for me was the report writing phase.  Not because I couldn't write well but because I really didn't have grasp on their method/version of report writing.  I went in 1994 but I will abstain from mentioning my department.  It's in Florida though and wa 5 months long then.  I imagine it's longer now.  I enjoyed the shooting and defensive tactics phase the best personally.  Email me if you would like more detail that I can't give you on here.  Good luck!

  6. It's kind of hard to say what was the most difficult thing about my training.  I think it's going to be different for everyone.  Some people are better at the physical training part than others and some are better at the academic portion than others.  You put the academic studies, physical training, memorization skills you will NEED to have (inspection time haha), on top of the yelling, screaming, in your face attitudes your going to get..........it's all a pain in the ***.  Just remember they are going to stress you out because they need to ensure you can handle stress and be able to perform under pressure.

  7. Just like in the military, the hardest thing most peopel have to contend with is learning how to think under pressure and never ever give up no matter what the odds are or how difficult the task is.  Come to think of it you can't learn that sort of thing, you are either born with it or you're not.

  8. The classroom work was hard. You have to memorize many laws and procedures and test on them.

  9. First congratulations. Police work can be a rewarding career. Second, relax, no matter what academy you are going to you can make it.

Pay attention at the academy so you learn the basics and what not to do. Then listen to your FTO where you will earn even more. Throughout the rest of your career watch, listen and learn.  Every day of my 30 years was a learning experience.

30 years ago the worst thing at the Chicago Academy was spending 18 weeks being treated like a high school kid.  You see the average age of the 130 cadets in my class was 29. Most of us had left higher paying jobs for a chance to be the police.  Academy personnel were used to kids just out of the service back then.

Most students I talk with complain about the physical aspect of their academy. Mine was not tough, the main thing was running 1.5 miles in 12 minutes.  The cadet classes after mine had to get over an 8 foot wall, no foot or hand holds. I know I couldn’t and would not have made it. Funny I jumped fences, chased down bad guys, pulled people out of burning buildings, ran up 15 flights of stairs to fight with 10 gangbangers etc. but I never had to pull myself over an 8 foot wall with no foot or hand holds.

Some of my students (mostly from the south and west) have told me that their state certification tests were hard, as was studying for them.  In my day only 2% of my class did not make the state test.

  10. Went in 2002 for a State Police agency.  The most difficult thing for me was being away from family for 24 weeks except for weekends.  Well, that and running 2 miles at first but that got incredibly easier in a short time period.  My suggestion for you is build up your cardio.  Body strength will happen on its own but you do need to get fit months before you go.  Mind strength is a must.  If you can't handle stressful situations, this field is not for you.  I think every answer to this question is right.  During these 2 months, practice running; and not just the initial 1 1/2 miles.  Work yourself up to at least 2 1/2 miles; that way you're kind of "over prepared" for the academy.
