  1. Definitely Greg Page, Definitely Greg Page.

  2. Gerry Cooney

    Greg Page

    Duane Bobick

    Mike Tyson

    Riddick Bowe

    Tommy Morrison

Gerry Cooney was looked at unfortunately as the next great white hope and was hyped up immensely with his powerful left hook.  He was regarded a can't miss and actually a pretty decent fighter.  Larry Holmes, a great champion was simply too much for Gentleman Gerry.

Greg Page was also a can't miss.  He had very fast hands and good size.  His problem seemed to be a lack of training coming in flabby for fights and motivation.  Never could seem to take it up a notch.

Duane Bobick was unfortunately another can't miss white hope.  He was badly beaten in the Olympics by the greqat Teofelo Stevenson, yet was looked as championship material winning a lot of fights in his career before taking on Ken Norton who knocked him out in one round.

Mike Tyson was going to be the greatest champ of all time.  He had tremendous power, speed and very intimidating.  Many thought he would never lose.  He obviously lost mental focus somewhere down the line losing to Douglas in a big upset.  From there, his career went on a downward spiral.

Riddick Bowe was a very gifted champion.  He could box, slug, had great size and many times showed a lot of heart too.  Had great fights with Holyfield.  I believe that he just got lazy and lackadaisial in some of his training and it showed in some of his later fights.

Tommy Morrison could nearly do it all.  He had speed, had good power and looked to be possibly the next great fighter.  Unfortunately he didn't have the chin to go with his other abilities and it showed in fights with Lewis and Mercer.

  3. I gotta go with Ray Mercer. Olympic gold medallist, cast-iron chin, and probably the best jab in the heavies since Larry Holmes, not to mention a monster right hand. He had flares of greatness against Evander Holyfield and Lennox Lewis, but always came up short, and looked downright terrible against a washed-up Larry Holmes and a tomato can in Jesse Ferguson.

Bowe is up there too, but he actually did peak for a while and was considered the best heavyweight at the time. He certainly could have held on to that title for longer had he dedicated himself.

  4. mike tyson

  5. Buster Douglas

  6. It has to be Greg Paige he had everything size power speed reflex's skills he was something to see. I went to the Nationals with Paige back in 78 he lost to Tony Tubbs and I could not see how he could lose to  a rollie pollie like Tubbs and I never looked at Greg the same after that fight side Greg was supposed to go to Cuba TO FIGHT sTEVENSON AND HE BACKED OUT OF IT OH I WAS THERE. Greg never came close to being what he could have been what a waste .Can anyone tell me how Greg is doing.

  7. Ali ,he had to cheat all the time to win any one good. what a disappointment to find out when you grow up a bit that your childhood hero was a farce and that the sport you loved all your life accepted this cheating farce as the greatest more like the fakest but any way i'm over that now LOL kids ,A

  8. Andrew Golotta had a history of anxiety attacks. Morrison really only had a big hook.

I think I would agree about Riddick, I used to be a big fan, he was a big heavyweight and had all the tools, but mentally he was fragile and like other boxers in the sport once he had become rich he got lazy, lost his will to train and fight. Once he was broke he tried to comeback but the years of inactivity had taken all his tools away and the older he got the lazier he got.

Ill always love his battles with Holyfield and his bewildering but exciting fights with Golotta. Although I believe as he did in the Olympics he would never have gotten by Lennox Lewis anyways. He threw his WBC title in the trash during a conference even because he did not want to fight Lewis. I lost a little respect for him after that and realized that he wasn't the future of the sport he appeared to be after his wars with Evander.

Another big disappointment for me was Ike Ibeabuchi, this guy was good, very very good, he had power and speed, a granite chin and a mental killer instinct that may be unmatched. He could have burned through the current heavyweight division. He could have been the next great heavyweight but like Bowe he was mentally weak and could not control himself.

After taking the record for the most punches thrown by a heavyweight in the history of the sport with an average of 81 punches per round against David Tua he got into some trouble on a plane, and later told people he could see Demons that tormented and heckled him.

He also kidnapped his ex's son and with the boy in the car drove at high speeds right into a concrete pillar, the boy lived and Ike was sent to Prison for a few months. When he was released he took a few wins and then destroyed the undefeated Chris Byrd in 5 rounds in only his 19th pro fight.

After the fight he pleaded guilty to assault and battery with the intent to commit rape. He was sentenced to 5 to 30 years. Even if he gets parole is unlikely any promoter will have anything to do with him,, and after 10 years out of the ring what would be the point anyways.

At one time I thought this guy would crush Lennox Lewis into retirement and I was a Lewis fan.

So for me it would be between Bowe and Ibeabuchi.

  9. Greg Paige
