Most dramatic moments of the 2012 tennis season: Part One – Tennis Special
Tennis does not remain merely a sport but it has evolved into an entertaining feast through the past few years. The 2012 tennis season witnessed a number of unusual events on the tennis courts but the sport remained the winner
on all occasions, enhancing the global status of tennis. Let us refresh our memories and review some of the most dramatic moments which took place on the tennis courts this year.
David Nalbandian leading an assault upon the line judge
Former world number three, David Nalbandian, finally showed some vintage class to reach all the way to the final of the AEGON Championships, facing the Croatian number one, Marin Cilic. The Argentinean veteran was in a commanding
position in the contest after bagging the opening set and was just moments away from bagging the championship title when the drama happened.
A close line call invoked the rage mode within Nalbandian and he kicked one of the advertising hoarding in sheer anger. Although not intended, the hoarding broke apart and hit the shin of the line judge sitting behind it. The sheer
impact caused immediate bleeding from his skin and a clamorous situation aroused. Albeit a pressing apology from Nalbandian, he was disqualified from the tournament and Cilic was awarded the championship title.
It was one of the most unforeseen moments in a tennis match and shall keep pinching Nalbandian for the rest of his life.
Kimiko Date-Krumm still playing on the WTA Tour?
Unlike other sports, tennis requires sheer physical fitness and strength to remain competitive in the professional circuit. You won’t see many players on the WTA Tour above the age of 40 years but Japanese veteran, Kimiko Date-Krumm
is a brilliant exception. While her fellow players are playing on the Senior Tour, Date-Krumm is still an active member of the elite WTA Tour, playing with the upcoming younger players at the age of 42.
Her physical fitness is a model for all the tennis players in the professional circuit. It just seems to be yesterday when Date-Krumm use to compete against the tennis giants like Steffi Graf and Monica Seles. Now she is competing
against the likes of Victoria Azarenka and Maria Sharapova, and it appears as if she will still keep competing like this for a couple of more years. Her winning habit hasn’t dried out yet and she won an ITF (International Tennis Federation) this year to stay
in the winners’ circle.
Date-Krumm’s intensity and endurance is supernatural and she is still demanding for more high-class competition in the coming seasons.
