Most dramatic moments of the 2012 tennis season: Part Two – Tennis Special
Record-breaking final of Australian Open 2012
We shall carry on looking at the jaw-dropping moments which caught our sights during the running tennis season. While thinking of such stunning and dramatic moments, how can we miss out the eye-startling final matchup of the Australian
Open. To me, no such intense contest has been witnessed throughout the entire 2012 ATP season like the one we saw on the hard courts of Melbourne in January.
With two of the tennis titans, Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic, in a Grand Slam final, it was bound to be a nail-biter but no one expected such thrilling encounter in the Australian Open title match. It was an absolute cracker,
lasting for nearly six hours of high-class tennis action from both contenders. The Aussie crowd at the glorious Rod Laver Arena witnessed the longest, certainly the hardest and arguably the greatest Grand Slam final in the history of tennis. Although the unquenchable
spirit of Djokovic brought him out as the exhausted winner in the end, the resilience which Nadal posted shall be remember for times to come.
Colours flowing at Wimbledon
The only grass-court Grand Slam event of the season, Wimbledon Championships, has always been associated with white colour. The coveted mega event has preserved its conventional class for decades with players wearing only white
clothing while competing on the lush green grass-courts. The 2012 Wimbledon Championships went as per its norm of ‘no colours’ but finally we saw beautiful colours spreading on the grass courts this year.
Yes, the Olympics Games were played at the glorious Wimbledon Arena and no stipulation was levied on players to wear only white. For the first time, we witnessed colours flowing at Wimbledon and believe me, it was a really pleasant
sight to have.
Serena Williams’ thumping comeback to tennis
After staying sidelined from professional tennis for almost a year, the legendary American professional, Serena Williams, made her way on the tennis courts this season. She took her time to get settled in the initial tournaments
she played but once she found her winning groove, she has been the real unstoppable force on the WTA Tour.
The 31-year-old veteran has been producing real jaw-dropping performances throughout the running season, bagging a total of six WTA championship titles. Her dominance on the tennis courts has been absolutely phenomenal and she
didn’t look like a 31-year-old contestant on the WTA Tour. Her opening round loss at the French Open this summer was the only jolt she suffered in the running season and the rest has been all hers.
She stamped her authority over the game by winning title in Charleston and Madrid, before her mishap at the French Open. She came back roaring at her favourite venue, Wimbledon, and won her 14th Grand Slam title in style.
Williams kept on with her winning impetus at the London Olympics and won the gold medal to complete her Career Golden Grand Slam, becoming only the second women tennis player in the history of the sport to achieve such feat. The American legend redeemed her
glory in from of her home crowd last month when she won the US Open championship title. Her form this season has been the most destructive one and she might reclaim her lost world number one spot in the coming season. As for the 2012 WTA season, it would not
be wrong to call it ‘Serena’s season’.
