I started going to the gym regularly about 2 years ago and what worked for me was to start with cardio, stay within 75-85% of your max heart rate.  Do this for about a month.  After you start seeing the weight come off then add some weight lifting into your routine.  Start by doing maybe 10 minutes of cardio first (to warm up the muscles and get your heart pumping a little bit) then if you don't know much about lifting, start with machines.  Don't spend more than 30 minutes at first.  Don't bounce all around the gym hitting all the machines randomly, pick a muscle group and focus on that. ie..upper body one day, lower body next time.  Lift weight maybe 3 times a week at first and alternate with cardio days.  You will notice the weight falling off and your fat percentage will go down as well.  Stay motivated and have fun...
