Question:

Most fuel efficient bike at 45mph?

I live in the U.S. on the east coast and I'd like to get some cheaper transportation! :) The roads I have to travel are posted at 40mph, but most people drive 50mph or more down them, so I'll probably be traveling 45mph to be safe. Mopeds and scooters seem to only go 35mph, so I guess I'm looking at motorcycles now. Thanks for the help!

  1. Yeah like Magz said a larger scooter will go faster than 35 for sure, but the little 50cc ones don't go very fast. A lot of folks are jumping on the new Ninja 250R. They average around 70MPG and get up to 78MPG highway. Not bad for $3500. Good looking bike also.

  2. go ahead and buy what you like.  all bikes will get great gas mileage, especially if you are only going 45 mph.  if you are making long distance drives you need to make sure that you feel comfortable on the bike.  if you are looking at motorcycles i would go with at least a 600, either in a sport bike or cruiser.

  3. plenty of scooters are the most fuel efficient, skip the motorcycle! I bought a scooter not too long ago and I am getting about 80 MPG and i fly on that little thing. I saw it was on sale if you are serious about buying one http://www.xtrememinimotors.com

  4. A Yamaha YG1(80cc 2 cycle) will do 45 top speed and is rated at 190 MPG according to Yamaha. Problem is they were last manufactured in 69.

Scooters only doing 35?? My 59 Vespa will do almost 90.

  5. Many (not all) bikes do well on gas mileage at or below 60 MPH and granted you are not stopping alot (urban traffic).

Some scooters out there are practically motorcycles.  They can do every last bit of their rated speeds which (depending on the scooter) can be, typically, 60 to 100MPH and get in the ball park of 60 to 100 or more MPG.

An example of a motorcycle that gets excellent gas mileage is the Royal Enfield which you can still by brand new and pretty cheap with lots of options.  You can also look at the Honda or Piaggio and many other manufacturers for scooters.

  6. bigger scooters will do 45 mph

250 cc and up is what you're looking for...
