Question:

Most healthy diet?

I am a generally healthy white 41-year-old female with a pretty poor diet due to trying to keep my weight down. I do know that I suffer from anemia, but iron pills and vitamins don't seem to be the best way to raise my hemoglobin. I would rather do it by eating a healthy diet.

My boyfriend is a healthy white 56-year-old male who had bladder cancer a couple of years ago, but has since recovered. He does smoke, but is currently trying to quit. His diet is fairly good, but could be better.

Anyway, my question is this..............

We are both very interested in a healthy diet and we would like to make whatever changes are needed to bring about optimum health. What kind of diet do we consider? Where can I find additional information on the diet, like recipes, shopping lists, etc..?

  1. It depends on your Blood Types...

    For "O", meat, eggs, fruits, nuts are best!

    For "A", fish, chicken, vegetables, bread, cereal, beer...

    For "B", dairy, and basically any other combination that they wish...

    And for "AB", a combination of "A" & "B"...


  2. In general, just adding fruits and veggies will help. The problem with diets is that even if you had the healthiest diet, ever, if you don't like it, you won't stick with it.

    To improve anemia (I was born with a severe form) try adding more whole grains and green-leafies, whole grains in normal foods you eat (replace white bread with wheat, regular cereal with whole-grain etc) and try to see if you like/can afford Buffalo/Bison meat 1-2 a week. It is less destructive to the environment than beef, and higher in b12s and other Bs and iron than beef.

    If you are anemic, you should make sure that every calorie you are taking in, whenever possible, has the most bang for the buck- replace things you eat with stuff that has things your body needs.

  3. 1) quite smoking.  If he must smoke, him using patches or chewing tobacco at least wouldn't spread it to you.  smoke makes it harder to get your nutrients.

    2) go outside more.  Not just to get away from the smoke, but for a bit of vitamin D.

    3) drink slimfast, if you must diet.  Slimfast at least has vitamins in it.  Of all the diet drinks I've found, slimfast is the one that gives me the most energy.

    4) all four food groups in each non-slimfast meal.  First priority is fruit and veg, then calcium types (like yogurt and milk), then protein (baked fish is best), then the grain group. some would say grain group as second, but it's a lot of empty calories.

    Cookbooks?  I'd go for the standard, depending on the personality you like best.  Mediterranean food can be healthy, with olive oil and the sauces that are filled with vegetables, and a minimum of meat.  

    Traditional Spanish, French, Syrian and Lebanese diets are all healthy, but when you westernise the cookbooks they often concentrate on what "tastes better".  The French are the healthiest people I've seen, but they eat food from a variety of cultures.

  4. I can't tell you how to diet as I have never done one. But, I can tell you what I do and it seems to work.

    Before leaving for work every morning and on the weekends, I drink a jigger of apple cider vinegar followed by a half cup of water mixed with raw physilium husk.

    Most people I have spoken with on this subject are convinced the physilium is a laxative, this is not true. Physilium simply makes you regular and helps curb your appetitie. I used to use white vinegar but switched to apple cider vinegar as a more natural and easier to swallow vinegar. I believe the vinegar keeps my system clean along with the physilium (aka colon cleanser). In addition, since starting the regiment (once a day, sometimes two) I have not had to worry about my weight (same age as boyfriend). And, I simply try the best I can to exercise and eat green and nice steak on the week ends.
