Most important current issue in the engineering field?

I have a 4 page essay that must discuss " the most important issue of concern in my community or in Australia,what needs to be done to resolve it, and how it affects me" all linking to a Field of engineering. I really would like some ideas,help or any tips that might be useful in completing this essay.

Australia is the world's largest exporter of coal. Also Australia has some of the worlds largest reserves of uranium, sliver, zinc, titanium, and tantalum. I think probably any essay that deals with the optimization of the mining industry would be a good topic.
