What is the highest title you can have if your not related to the royal family? Or just not closely related?

Can you be knighted or something and than be raised up further?

What about future children?

Please list kingdom you used!

  1. duke, marquess,  earl

apparently ppl dont understand that you dont have to be related to the royal fam to be a duke. there are royal dukes but not all dukes are such.

  2. Duke, in English, duque or duc or duca elsewhere on the continent, is the highest title available to someone who may not have been born royal. Although some dukes are royal, Charlie is Duke of Cornwall, Andrew Duke of York, Phil the Greek is Duke of Edinburgh.

The word comes from the Latin for leader, by implication leading the army to war. So past Dukes have been army generals who made good, for example, Wellington - there are still Dukes of Wellington now.

Can't remember the last time a monarch in England made a non-royal a Duke, may have been Wellington? Can some historian advise?

  3. Child of God.

  4. In Britain the head of state is usually a King or Queen, but there have been four heads of state who did not hold the title of King or Queen:

    Empress Matilda

    Lady Jane Grey

    Lord Protector Oliver Cromwell

    Lord Protector Richard Cromwell

Matilda and Jane Grey were royals. The highest non-regal title that has been held is "Lord Protector," but that was only during the bried period in which the monarchy was dissolved.

  5. Prime Minister.  The U.K.

  6. The highest rank in the peerage that is not of immediate relation to the main royal family is an Earl.  That's if you're talking about the peerage.   If you're not talking about the peerage, turdferg is correct:   Prime Minister.   I'm speaking of England.

If you're interested in the order of the peerage, I've included some websites.

  7. Duke is the highest aristocratic title.

In order of precedence(Importance),the titles of non-royal aristocrats are Duke/Duchess,Marquess/Marchioness,

    Earl/Countess,Viscount/Viscountess,

    Baron/Baroness

    Untitled Honors:

    Baronet,Knights/Dames of various orders

Politically-speaking,the most important non-aristocratic,non-royal title is Prime Minister.

  8. Oliver Cromwell held the title by the Grace of God Lord Protector of the Commonwealth of England, Scotland and Ireland and other territories.

I think all non-royal titles can be given out by the Queen but some of the most important that have nothing to do with her are probably Scottish.

  9. if your talking about Peerage its a Duke.

orders of peerage go as follows:

    Duke

    Marquess

    Earl

    Viscount

    Baron

Baronet (technically Baronets are not peers)

they can be hereditary or not.
