Most of beach volleyball Olympic seats sold out to politicians – London Olympics 2012
Seems pretty ‘tongue in cheek’ but that is true that according to the recent statistics. Most of the tickets for the beach volleyball tournament at the upcoming 2012 London Olympic Games have been sold out to the politicians.
The figures say that more than 400 tickets have been purchased by the government departments only. It clearly shows the popularity of the startling sport of beach volleyball among politicians and government officials.
The Britain’s former Labour sports minister, Gerry Sutcliffe, who recently appeared at the Culture, Media and Sport select committee meeting, also talked about the growing popularity of beach volleyball amongst the politicians. He asked that whether it was
“an oddity” that this particular sport appears to be one of the most admired Olympic sports for MPs.
The sport of beach volleyball, especially the women’s game, has always been a fascination for its witnesses. Beach volleyball, which only became an Olympic sport in 1996, has always attracted huge number of fans. As far as the politicians are concerned,
they are found in the front row.
Nevertheless, the politicians offered a perfectly reasonable excuse saying that many of the Olympic matches are scheduled to take place at the weekend, when the MPs are free. Hence, there is no offense in going to matches at the end of week. This has to
be the plausible excuse. So you better be ready to see 15,000-seater venue just be occupied by the MPs and off-duty businessmen, next summer.
The 2012 Olympic Beach Volleyball tournament is set to take centre stage on July 28 at the Horse Guards Parade in Central London. This is the same venue which hosted the FIVB test beach volleyball tournament last summer, when David Cameron joked about it.
He said, “I'm not going to cut down the trees at No 10 so I can get a better view.”
Jo Healy, a former beach volleyball player and spokeswoman for British Volleyball, has a different view though. She commented, “We did see a lot of men in suits drinking beer at last summer's test event but they really got into the spirit of the game. We
expect the Olympic stadium to be filled with the sport's many international fans - who are much more interested in the players' skill than in what they're wearing.”
The clock is ticking down quickly and soon the wonderful action of beach volleyball will start off. Let’s see what kind of crowd is seen at the Horse Guards Parade venue for the support of players.
