Notice I didn't say "best" position in medicine we all differ. Okay, Im working on pre-med and I fell in love with chemistry. I like biology a bit more, but I want to work research projects with others and go med- is this possible w/o the phd option?

  1. In the U.S. you have unlimitless options if you like research and want to be an MD at the same time. No need for a PhD, once in med school your professors will love to have you do research projects and get involved. Frankly, the opportunities are such that right now your only concern should be to get into med school. Of course, some schools are heavier into research than others. Then, there is always the NIH where research reigns supreme. Good luck.

  2. Look into Clinical Chemistry/Chemical Pathology/Metabolic Medicine. Lots of biochemistry, still very medical and lots of opportunities for research, if that's what you want to get into. The qualifications required depend on where in the world you are, but here in the UK a PhD is certainly not required, although it might speed up progress through your career and give you great practical skills. There are so many opportunities for research projects, particularly since loads of research studies in other specialties involve blood work and often specialist chemistry. Personally, I work in Clinical Chemistry with BSc/MSc/PhD in biochemistry and without a medical degree, but I'm more lab-based. In other countries my job would probably be done by medics.
