Most significant racing plane?

Well for all you aviation history fans, I have a poser for ya!

In all of aviation history, there have been a multitude of races and winners, but only a few legends. Which planes do you think are the most legendary and/or significant in air racing history? My votes are:

The DeHavilland D.H.88 Comet

THE RARE BARE this decade or any decade.  Pulling manifold pressure in the upper 70s+ on a R3350 is riding the razor's edge between ecstasy and oblivion.  Too little...you lose, too much and the master rod explodes through the case. But man what a sound.  Rolls Royce in-lines make you smile when they fly by, but that hopped up nitrous P&W 3350 makes you grin.

If you're looking for specifics I'd vote for Rare Bear.

Still holds the airspeed record for piston driven aircraft... and it's been racing for over 4 decades.

For me, nothing beats the legend of the Supermarine S.6B.

Maybe it is the racing history (Schneider Trophy) or the fact that it is related to the development of the Spitfire, the S6 is legend.

My opinion is the Extra 300S

That plane is a tail-dragging beast!!!

My favorites are the Goodyear F2G "Super" Corsair and, of course, the North American P-51D. Both with top speeds over 430 MPH

I really have to answer this based on the many years I have been to the Reno Air Races.  2 aircraft really stand out.  Rare Bear, and Dago Red.  Rare Bear has the higher wow factor when it goes by and when it is running right, NOTHING can beat it.  But Dago Red has been more consistant for many years beating the Bear a lot.  Both are a thrill to watch.  

If pressed to choose one, it would be Rare Bear.  

The Gee Bee series have to be considered for the fact of the bravery of those few pilots who flew it.  

Incidently there is now jet racing at the Reno Air Races.  They are neat to watch but still don't provide the "rush" that the Unlimiteds do.
