Most surprising Moments from 2012 Tennis season: Part Three – Tennis Special
Roger Federer’s seventh win at Wimbledon
King of Grass, Roger Federer, claimed his seventh Wimbledon title against the young Scot, Andy Murray. The Swiss champion registered a 4-6, 7-5, 6-3, 6-4, triumph after displaying his powerful vintage performance and manifesting
his superior experience at the Grand Slam Championship.
"I played some of my best tennis in my last couple of matches. I couldn't be more happy. It feels great being back here as the winner and it's a great moment. It feels nice to have this trophy back after three years. It will take
me a long time to understand what I've achieved here today."
After his spectacular win at the courts of the All England Club, he stands next to the American tennis legend, Pete Sampras, as he is the only one in the Open Era to bag home his seventh Wimbledon victory. After the Championships,
he topped the world number one spot in the South African Airways ATP World Tour Rankings. Recently, the Swiss Maestro set the record of being on the top of the world charts for the most number of weeks and rallied beyond Sampras.
The comeback of the Swiss senior was very unpredictable as the tennis courts were dominated by his junior players like the Serbian number one, Novak Djokovic and the king of clay, Rafael Nadal. The green grass surface was clear
after the unfortunate withdrawal of the Spaniard, after his knee was plagued with injury.
The right-hander Swiss professional, gave the Serbian challenger a tough deal in the semi-finals. Djokovic displayed an excellent run of form in the previous year, claiming to be at the peak of his form. In the previous year, he
has been the finalist in all the four Grand Slams, pocketing away three Major titles. In the past two years, he defeated the Swiss contender six times. His victory against Federer at the French Open came without much struggle, as the Serbian won a little too
easy against the powerless Federer.
Nonetheless, Nadal’s withdrawal surely saved the Swiss professional’s skin. The left-hander encountered his senior 28 times and confidently sustained his lead in the head-to-head series by pocketing 18 of 10 matches. He defeated
the Serbian tennis ace at the Roland Garros. His performance at the French Open was remarkable and he dominated the game through his classic action plan and could have won the final. However, luck favoured the Swiss and he beautifully journeyed to clinch the
victory.
The greatest sufferer of the reigning world champion is the 25-year-old, Murray. The young Scot desperately battled through the Champion but seemed useless in front of the Swiss competitor's class. He dashed the hopes of his fellow
citizens who eagerly waited for 76 years to see their native player wear the crown.
The Swiss star journeyed to the front line after he recovered from a sloppy start in the match and completely sabotaged the hopes of the 25-year-old, Murray on his home ground. He picked up the pace in the third set after a rain
break, securing a decisive break to mark an emphatic end to the ending year career.
